The City’s Approach to Recent Protests | Re-Opening of Williamson & Baldwin Streets

Note to District 20 Community:

 We have had some very challenging weeks in our City. Tensions in our community have been running high … remembered were the deaths of Paulie Heenan, Tony Robinson and the recent events surrounding the shooting of Corey Ruiz, the memorial established at Williamson & Baldwin Streets, the dismantling of the memorial and the encampment, the impact on community  residents & merchants, community responses (positive and negative), City Budget considerations surrounding the Office of the Independent Police Monitor (IM), Police Civilian Oversight Board (PCOB), the Madison Police Department, Body Worn Cameras, the Ruiz family, the family of the Police Officer, the report from the DOJ; all summarized by one community member’s communication to ALL ALDERS which read: 

..people are tired

..people are angry

..people are scared

..people want justice

..people need help

..”If Madison does not find a way forward, clearing that encampment will become something else unforgivable.”
