Know your rights; Regent Street construction project meeting Monday; Friends of Hoyt Park sledding event Sunday and much more!

Hello neighbors,

As a local elected official, I have been asked about what we are doing in the face of current federal actions. Please know that we are closely coordinating with all emergency management personnel in the area, including local law enforcement, and the organizations directly serving vulnerable members of our community. The City of Madison has filed amicus briefs alongside the City of Minneapolis and state of Minnesota in their lawsuit against the federal administration regarding the surge of federal agents in our neighboring state. The City has also created a Know Your Rights page, for ease of access.

Voces de la Frontera is the organizing agency for Wisconsin responding to federal immigration enforcement actions. Please contact them if you wish to learn more. I urge you to heed the words of our MLK Jr. Day honored speaker, Dr. Marc Lamont Hill, which I have excerpted here:

“We’ve got to keep moving through organized action…. Organized action means… join an organization! Join an organization. I didn’t say start one….The myth of history is that history advanced through the event-making man….. But history is not advanced by the singular hero. For every person with a microphone…there are tens of thousands who organized, who struggled, who voted, who prayed, who made photocopies, who cooked, who bailed people out of jail, who stood in the gap for freedom to happen…Join an organization. And stay in the organization.”

Construction Updates

Thank you to everyone who joined the public information meeting about the reconstruction of Virginia Terrace and adjoining streets, planned to begin this summer. The meeting recording is now on the project page. Please subscribe to the page for updates (scroll down and fill in where it says “Get email updates”) – this will be the best way to stay up to date on the project.

TOMORROW: Regent Street Reconstruction, Monday, January 26The City is planning to reconstruct Regent Street (Randall Avenue to S. Park Street). A public information meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., Jan. 26, 2026, via Zoom. Registration prior is required.

The Board of Public Works will be reviewing plans and specifications for patching Midvale Blvd and adding safety enhancements on Wednesday, January 28, at 4:30 p.m. This patching is an alternative to the original plan for resurfacing the roadway. Instead, patching will improve asphalt quality until a full reconstruction project can occur, likely in 2032, when an all-ages-and-abilities bike resource will be prioritized with the reconstruction project. The scope of the project includes:

  • Spot pavement patching in the worst areas
  • Marked line between parking/travel lane to change the feel of the street
  • Curb extensions into the street to manage speeding and improve pedestrian crossing, using paint and/or plastic, temporary tubular bollards
  • Pedestrian activated push button flashing lights and signs (Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons) at Hillcrest & Heather Crest to improve pedestrian crossing
  • Enhanced painted crosswalks for better visibility

The next major construction project currently planned for our district will be S Franklin Ave (Regent to Speedway), likely in 2027. Please note that the timing and scope of planned engineering projects can and do change, based on prioritization needs, and budget and staffing availability.
