Fantastic Local Artist Looking For Your Help!

posted

Madison artist Jenie Gao is a finalist for a public artwork that will be commissioned by Madison Metro Transit Station. The artwork will be installed at East Washington Avenue and Ingersoll Street, and will become a prominent landmark on the East Wash corridor.

Jenie is looking to collect the stories of people who rely on Madison's buses to help inform the project, especially BIPOC who are frequently left out of surveys, input, and decision-making.

How to participate:

  1. 30-minute interviews (limited spots) in late June and mid-July (Zoom or in-person). Email Jenie directly to schedule.
  2. A community questionnaire that you can fill out online

Want to help Jenie become the artist for Madison Metro?

  1. Fill out the feedback form on finalist presentations before July 12You can voice your support for Jenie there, and also give feedback on the project.
  2. Finalist presentations will be on September 7 where all four finalists will show their proposed artworks. The presentations will be open to the public and there will be another chance to share your feedback with the city on the selection of the artist for this project.

From Jenie: "There is so much I could say about why it feels significant to be a finalist for this project. Women of color are rarely finalists for large scale public art projects, so it's an exciting milestone for me to make it into the finalist round. It will be even more amazing to win the contract, and I can do it with the community's support. This artwork will also become a part of a neighborhood where I lived for almost eight years--it's on the same street as my former studio and a few blocks from my old home. I have great affection for this place and would be so honored to create a community landmark with your endorsement."
