Non-Essential City Services Suspended Jan 12-13 -&- Parking Rules during declared snow emergencies

posted

All Non-essential, In-person City Services will be Suspended on Friday January 12 through Saturday January 13

Due to expected heavy snowfall and strong blowing snow conditions starting early Friday morning and continuing through Saturday, all non-essential, in-person City services will be suspended on Friday January 12 through Saturday January 13, resuming Sunday January 14, 2024. Emergency services, including the Madison Police and Fire Departments will not be affected by the closure.  Madison Metro plans to operate regularly scheduled service; riders should expect delays due to the weather. Remote and online services such as online permitting will continue to be offered during this time and all services and departments will be accessible via phone and/or email. City facilities will not be open to the public for in-person service.

The Madison Streets Division will perform snow plowing and sand/salting operations. Madison Police, Fire and Streets Division will work closely with Dane County Emergency Management to continue monitoring conditions throughout the weather event.

We expect that in-person operations at Libraries with Sunday hours will resume on Sunday January 14, 2024 (though residents should check Library webpages) and that City offices will reopen for in-person service Tuesday (Monday is Martin Luther King Junior holiday). We will continue to monitor the weather for Sunday and will provide you with notice should conditions warrant additional closures.

All of District 6 is in the Snow Emergency Zone. You only need to follow overnight alternate side parking rules during a Declared Snow Emergency. But during a Declared Snow Emergency, you must follow both Clean Streets/Clean Lakes and alternate side parking rules if your street is posted as in the Clean Streets/Clean Lakes program. (Yes it can be inconvenient).

Some residents have gotten tickets during the recent declared snow emergency, please remind yourself of the rules for the Isthmus:

Clean Streets/Clean Lakes

Many streets within the Snow Emergency Zone also have posted year-round Clean Streets/Clean Lakes parking rules. All posted parking rules remain in effect in the winter.

One-Sided Parking Streets

Exception: Blocks with one-sided parking are exempt from alternate side parking requirements, including during a Declared Snow Emergency.

Declared Snow Emergency

The City of Madison declares a Snow Emergency when we need to plow all residential streets. This most often happens when there are three or more inches of snow on the roads.

During a Snow Emergency, people who park in the Snow Emergency Zone must follow alternate side parking rules for the next two nights.  A Snow Emergency may be extended past the 48 hours if needed.

The city will always declare a Snow Emergency before 9:00 pm on the night it will take effect.

Please note: During a Snow Emergency, Alternate Side Parking fines are $60, plus a $115 towing fee.

Don't let the snow lead to a ticket or a tow!

Please visit www.cityofmadison.com/Winter for additional information including snow plowing updates. As winter weather worsens, make sure to sign up for Winter Weather Alerts!

Stay warm and be safe!
