07/29/26 Update on Willy / Baldwin Protest Area

The intersection of Williamson and Baldwin Streets remains occupied by an ongoing vigil after the police killing of Corey Ruiz one week ago. We continue to look for a peaceful resolution that memorializes the anger and pain people rightfully feel and also that serves the needs of the whole community.

I have received hundreds of messages from residents, people who work in the neighborhood and other supporters of the businesses and service providers on Willy St. It will take time to respond to everyone, but I'm hoping I can answer many questions and concerns in this post.

The City of Madison put out this informative FAQ that covers:

This FAQ also answers many questions about the incident, the investigation and the process going forward.

I've continued meeting with organizers, and together we're finding small ways to move forward. I really appreciated that the group proposed quiet hours between 10pm–7am. And one very bright note, we expect St. Vinnie's to reopen on Saturday, providing a valuable service to our neighborhood and our neighbors, housed and unhoused alike.

We also have city social workers getting unhoused people better shelter. During the heat advisory over the weekend, eleven people including a family with small children were able to be placed in a hotel.

We are restoring trash and recycling pickup this Thursday. I am also working to ensure resident access to driveways especially during upcoming move-outs / move-ins.

This is a difficult situation that has also brought our homeless issues to the surface. I ask for your continued patience, fully-knowing the difficulties you may be facing.

Again, my priority remains a peaceful path forward emphasizing public safety without any further harm done to our community.
