Snow Plowing Update

posted

Morning neighbors,

Streets Division crews have been out all night, and will be on through the day.  Roads are slippery.  Trash and recycling collection will happen as scheduled on Thursday.  The entire City of Madison will not be plowed.

Streets Division crews have been circling through the salt routes plowing and salting them as needed as this wintry mix of sleet, snow, and ice fell.  "Salt routes" are the main thoroughfares of Madison that are used by Madison Metro for their buses, and the roads around emergency services like hospitals. Crews will continue on with this work through the day on Thursday.  Additional crews will also be applying sand on the hills, curves, and intersections on the residential areas that are not part of the salt route network.  The sand mixture is spread to help provide traction in these areas.

The wintry mix is expected to continue on Thursday with chances of freezing rain by mid to late morning.  All travelers should expect to encounter slippery roads and paths covered with sleet and ice throughout the day, especially during the morning commute while the precipitation is active.  If you choose to be out, please make good choices. Anticipate your stops and turns to minimize the chance you slide.  Do not follow vehicles, including our plows, as if the roads are dry.  Be slow. Be patient. Stay alert.

The Thursday trash and recycling pickup will occur as scheduled.  If you have a Thursday scheduled collection day, please have the carts out for emptying by 6:30am so you do not miss your collection opportunity.  The Streets Division drop-off sites are also open for their winter hours.

There will not be a citywide plowing operation in response to this storm.  We did not receive enough accumulation to plow the entire city curb-to-curb.  As a result, once this storm is finally over, residential roads will likely be covered while the main thoroughfares that are salted and plowed will have less accumulation on them.  This is the normal procedure in response to winter events that do not meet the citywide plowing threshold.

Streets Division staff will be carefully monitoring the roads and the weather. Should conditions require a change in operations, additional updates will be provided.

Be safe,

Alder Wehelie.
