I hope you're all doing well as we move into the final week of August. Last week saw great momentum from transportation improvements to community connections in our parks. Thank you to everyone who joined in, shared feedback, or stopped to say hello.

Below are the key updates and events happening this week in District 7.


🌟 Meeting & Event Highlights

  • Parks Alive:
    • Galaxy Park — Monday, August 25 at 5:00 p.m.: Join us for music, food, and neighborhood fun.
    • Sandburg Park — Tuesday, August 26 at 5:00 p.m.: A great evening for family-friendly engagement.
    • Hammersley Park — Wednesday, August 27 at 5:00 p.m.: Come together for activities in the park.
  • Commute & Transportation:
    • Wilson Street Corridor Ribbon Cutting — Wednesday, August 27 at 9:00 a.m.: Celebrate improvements in mobility near MLK Jr. Blvd and Wilson Street.
  • Community Engagement Opportunities:
    • Monday Mornings at The Glen — August 25 (multiple dates): A peaceful start to your day—stroll, run, or walk your dog at The Glen before 8:00 a.m.
    • Volunteer at The Glen — Saturday, August 30: Pitch in with beautification efforts at The Glen Golf Park.
    • Bird & Nature Adventures at Edna Taylor — Saturday, August 30: Join Master Naturalist Sean Gere for a free, family-friendly nature walk exploring seasonal changes.

🏙️ City Updates & Notices

  • Goodman Pool remains open daily (weather permitting) through Sunday, August 31. Dive in before the season wraps up!
  • Weather Alert: Expect late-week storms, please watch for flash flooding and possible road impacts.
  • Street & Construction Notices:
    • W Badger Road (westbound) and N Rusk Avenue (southbound) remain closed due to ongoing road and shared-use path construction.
    • E Doty Street (MLK Jr. Blvd to Pinckney St) is undergoing asphalt repair; expect intermittent delays.
    • Nakoma Road Project: The full closure from Tumalo Trail to Manitou Way begins Wednesday, August 27.
  • Triangle Redevelopment: Groundbreaking has officially taken place—this transformational downtown project is now underway.
  • Elections Update: The City Clerk’s Office continues to support election integrity, reflecting the most recent Wisconsin Election Commission orders.

📌 Announcements & Community Notes

  • The new textile exhibition, “Southern White Amnesia” by Zak Foster, is now on display at the Central Library, don't miss it.
  • City Forestry Tree Pruning Notice:
    City Forestry crews will soon be pruning trees in the area highlighted in purple on the City’s forestry maps. Their objective is to prune every tree in the right-of-way that requires work within that area. You can find additional information regarding pruning operations here. If you or your neighbors have questions, please don’t hesitate to call or email City Forestry staff.
  • Share Your Thoughts on Public Art for the Far West Maintenance Facility:
    The City of Madison Engineering Division is working on a new Far West Public Works Operations Building, which will serve as a home base for City services closer to Far West neighborhoods. As part of this project, The Milligan Studio is developing a public art installation for the site. The artists are seeking community input and invite you to share your feedback by completing the survey linked below.

Updates and Notices

Boards, Commissions, and Committee Meetings

Note: This is not a complete list of meetings for this upcoming week. All meetings and their details can be found at the Meeting Schedule page.

  • Finance Committee: The Finance Committee meeting will take place on Monday, August 25, at 4:30 p.m. in virtual format. Agenda items include accepting the Economic Development Division’s “2025 Small Business Assistance Policy Paper” as the foundation for structuring and conducting a Request for Proposals (RFP) process, an overview of the 2026 Operating Budget Requests and the Budget Process, and a discussion on the format for the 2026 Budget Deliberation Meeting.
  • Plan Commission: The Plan Commission meeting will take place on Monday, August 25, at 5:30 p.m. in virtual format. Agenda items include staff updates on the Southwest and Southeast Area Plans, as well as development-related requests in Districts 4 and 12.

Public Information Meetings (PIMs)

  • MacArthur Road, Larson Court, Sycamore Avenue Reconstruction, Wednesday, August 27The purpose of this project is to reconstruct the pavement and replace underground utilities on MacArthur Rd from E Washington to S End, Larson Ct from E End to MacArthur Rd, and Sycamore Ave from MacArthur Rd to Mendota St. A public information meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m., Aug. 27, 2025. Registration is required.
  • Pflaum Road Resurfacing, Thursday, August 28City Engineering plans to remove and replace the asphalt pavement and road base, replace sanitary sewer main and laterals, replace water main and laterals, replace storm sewer and private storm connections, replace curb and gutter, sidewalk and drive aprons as needed. A public information meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m., Aug. 28, 2025, via Zoom. Registration is required.

  • Monday Mornings at The Glen, Monday, August 25Enjoy The Glen for a stroll, nature, workout or leashed dog walk from sunrise to 8:00 am. Tee times resume at hole #1 at 8:00am. Visitors should be alert for golf balls and golfers while exiting the course.
  • Learn to Kayak, Monday, August 25Learn to Kayak with Madison Boats! Register online for this free class offered at Marshall Park. All ages are welcome! Anyone under 18 must have a guardian present and anyone under the age of 7 must have their guardian in the kayak.
  • Learn & Ride, Tuesday, August 26 (Junction Road Park & Ride and Baldwin Station)Both events are drop-in formats and take place at two convenient locations, open to the public. Don't miss this chance to see firsthand how to ride the bus and get helpful tips on navigating transit options across the greater Madison area with Metro Transit. All events will be held inside or near the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) stations.
  • Drywall Installation and Repair by Project Home, Tuesday, August 26Is your drywall work less than perfect? This comprehensive class takes the frustration out of drywall projects. We’ll cover everything from the basics to advanced techniques, including proper tool usage, selecting the right materials for any situation, and mastering the tricks of the trade for smooth finishes and invisible repairs.
  • Cyclocross Practice Night, Wednesday, August 27In partnership with CORP (Capital Off Road Pathfinders), we offer practice cyclocross courses in select parks for one designated evening in the late summer and early fall.
  • Dane Dances: V-Funk / Montage, Friday, August 29Dane Dances is a free, family-friendly event held every Friday evening in August on the beautiful Monona Terrace rooftop. The much-anticipated summer music series promotes inclusivity for all ages and is a great way to get down and dance with your friends, family, or coworkers.
  • Mobile Vaccination Clinic - Hawthorne Elementary School, Saturday, August 30(link is external)All vaccines are free for eligible individuals. Children six months and older who lack insurance, are under 19, and are either Alaskan Native or American Indian, as well as those with BadgerCare or most other types of insurance, can receive vaccinations at no cost.
