Meet Firefighter/EMT Jesse Drake
posted
Where are you stationed?
Currently I am downtown at Station 1 on the 'A' shift.
What do you like about your station/territory?
Working downtown, there is a lot to like. I like our call volume. Being new on the department, there is a lot for me to learn, and I feel that experience on calls is one of the best ways to learn and grow. With all of the events going on downtown, there is a variety of patients and calls, and I like that every call is different.
Also, I am lucky to have the tiller here. There are so many tools on the truck and so much to learn. I am very lucky to be at Station 1 gaining experience on a busy engine and on the tiller.
How has your previous education or work experience prepared you for the role of firefighter/EMT for the City of Madison?
In the past, I worked in primary healthcare. This benefits my medical skills and knowledge. Also, it helps being used to working with all ages, from newborns to the elderly. This has helped my communication with patients and members of the community. All of the patient interactions I have had allow me to feel more comfortable assessing all ages. I have also been exposed to many of the common prescription medications. This has helped me be a better EMT for our community and provide a higher level of care.
What's the most rewarding aspect of the job for you?
The most rewarding aspect of the job for me is being able to go home from work every day knowing we have made a difference in someone's life.
What do you do when you're not working at MFD?
When I am not working, I love to work out and spend time with friends and family. I also love to watch and play pretty much any sport. I grew up as a swimmer, so I am not always the most coordinated but enjoy pretty much everything when with friends.
