Where are you stationed?

I've been assigned to Station 1 (W. Dayton Street) for the past thirteen years, twelve on the "A" shift. In January, I was promoted and moved to Station 1 on the "B" shift.

When did you start your career?

I started in the fire service in Appleton, Wisconsin, in 2000 and started with the MFD in 2005.

What was the process of getting to this point in your career?

I spent two years as a firefighter on the west side, five years as a firefighter/paramedic at three stations, and the last twelve years as a driver at Station 1. While studying for the Lieutenant's test, crews at Station 1 were essential to my success, and I thank them for it.

What's special about your specific station?

Station 1 is the home of MFD's Lake Rescue/SCUBA team, which provides many unique challenges and opportunities to help our cities' many boating and lake enthusiasts.

What makes serving your district in Madison unique?

I love working downtown on a big crew. Everyone at my station likes being busy and running many calls; Engine 1 gets over 5,000 calls a year.

Where did you grow up, and did you have any prior history working in the fire service ?

I was born and raised in the state of Utah but moved to the Pacific Northwest in 1988. There I started as a volunteer firefighter in 1993 and volunteered with the Oceanside, Oregon, and Whatcom County, Washington, Fire Departments. I worked with Appleton Fire Department from 2000-2004.

Is there a moment in your career you're especially proud of?

The proudest moment of my career was when I had the privilege of accompanying four other MFD members– who also previously worked in Appleton– to assist the AFD during the funeral of fallen AFD firefighter Mitch Lundgaard after he was killed in the line of duty. The five of us were able to cover calls for AFD Station 1 so on-duty members could attend the funeral. It was a reminder of how the fire service is a family and we take care of each other.

What's something people would be surprised to learn about you?

Before moving to Wisconsin in 2000, I spent time as a back-country ranger with the National Park Service and United States Forest Service in Oregon and Washington states.

What advice would you give firefighters who want to promote?

Rely on your officers, driver, and crew to help you prepare. They want you to be successful.
