National Preparedness Month: Personal Preparedness
postedSeptember is Preparedness Month, and our Emergency Management team encourages you to take steps to strengthen your personal preparedness!
First, consider the types of hazards we are most likely to see here in Madison. These often includes tornadoes, floods, winter storms, power outages, and extreme temperatures.
The emergencies we face locally are more likely to have us shelter in place than evacuate, but keep both possibilities in mind when making your emergency plan. Learn more about sheltering in place and how to prepare for evacuation.
Build A Kit
A well-stocked kit is the key to staying safe and comfortable while sheltering in place or evacuating during an emergency. Consider additional items for:
Stay Informed
Be sure you're signed up for emergency alerts from Dane County.
Monitor local media outlets during times of severe weather. NOAA weather radios can help wake you up when alerts are issued overnight. Keep in mind that sirens are only intended for warning people who are outdoors. Learn more about the Outdoor Warning Sirens.
Check On Your People
Reach out to loved ones, neighbors, and coworkers after something happens. Personal connections and social networks are known to be strong protective factors for surviving and recovering from emergencies.
Always Be Prepared
Work on preparedness year-round. Taking it seriously can feel overwhelming or unpleasant. Break it down into monthly tasks and use the changing seasons to ensure your efforts work throughout the whole year!
