Firefighter/EMT Rudy Barlow

Where are you stationed?
Station 13 (Metro Drive) on the ‘B' shift.

Why did you choose Madison Fire Department?
Growing up, several of my mentors were members of the Madison Fire Department. They mentored me and other youth in the community purely out of the kindness of their hearts. Whether coaching sports or leading local events, they consistently made a positive impact and exemplified true strength of character through their professionalism, integrity, and genuine care for others. Seeing their impact inspired me to follow in their footsteps.

What did you do before working for MFD?
Before joining MFD, I worked as a construction project manager. I started out with a non-profit organization focused on developing affordable housing throughout Wisconsin and later moved to a larger construction firm where I had the opportunity to manage projects across the United States.

How did your previous education or work experience help prepare you for this role?
I earned my associate degree in Liberal Arts & Science from Madison College before earning a bachelor's degree in Building Construction Management from UW-Platteville. My experience as a construction project manager; handling logistics, dynamic problem-solving, team coordination, and high-pressure deadlines across small startups and large firms prepared me well for the fast-paced, critical environment of fire and emergency services.

What advice would you give someone who wants to become a firefighter/EMT?
Understand that choosing this path means committing to lifelong learning. Medical protocols, firefighting tactics, and emergency response strategies constantly evolve, meaning there are always new ways to grow and refine your craft. Above all, remember that this career demands your absolute best every single day because the community you serve deserves nothing less.

How do you see your role within the fire department contributing positively to the Madison community?
Wearing the MFD uniform brings a deep sense of responsibility and humility; citizens constantly express gratitude, and it is a privilege to stand in a position to help people on their hardest days. I am committed to being a servant leader both on and off duty, whether providing high-quality medical care in the back of an ambulance or connecting with residents at local community gatherings.

What is your earliest memory with a firefighter/EMT or paramedic, and how did it influence your desire to pursue this career?
When I was a child, my sister accidentally started a grease fire in the kitchen of our family home. The fire department arrived, put out the fire, and ultimately saved the home where I grew up and where my parents still reside many years later. I was very grateful to the fire department for arriving promptly and saving our family home, which means so much to all of us.

What are you doing when you're not training?
When I'm not training, I love spending quality time with my family, working on automobiles or home improvement projects, playing sports, and staying engaged by attending local community events.
