Below is a roundup of emergency calls that MFD responded to as a result of the severe thunderstorms that occurred on Wednesday, June 10. 

MFD responded to more than 60 calls related to the storm, the majority of which occurred between 1:50-4:00 PM and pertained to down power lines. 

During the height of the storm, all MFD rigs were assigned to various calls simultaneously throughout the city, in some cases requiring mutual aid responses from surrounding communities. 

MFD thanks and recognizes all personnel who responded to each emergency with utmost care and professionalism, without delay, amid the dangers of the storm. 

The summaries below do not include the routine fire and EMS calls that also occurred during this time frame. 

1:54 PM – 5513 Russett Road – Engine 7 investigated a power line down in the backyard. No arcing, no imminent danger, MGE notified. 

1:55 PM – 14 Carillon Drive – Ladder 2 finds smoldering vegetation on a tree that made contact with a down wire. L2 notified MGE for response.

1:56 PM – Hillcrest Drive & Larkin Street – Engine 4 finds multiple tree limbs that knocked down power and communications lines. MGE notified.

1:57 PM – Meyer Avenue & Westmoreland Blvd. – Engine 9 responded for a down power line. ‘Caution' tape applied to establish a perimeter. MGE notified and MPD on location.

1:59 PM – S. Midvale Blvd. & Tokay Blvd. – Ladder 7 responded for arcing wires. An occupant pointed were a branch had fallen and made contact with the power lines. The branch in question was no longer contacting the wires, no wires were damaged, and no imminent threat found. 

2:00 PM – 1217 Vilas Avenue – Ladder 1 finds a very large tree hanging on a power line and the tree had partially crushed a car. There were also power lines down from multiple houses. Occupants were advised to stay in their houses. ‘Caution' tape was put in place to block the sidewalk and street. MPD also on scene to help with the safety perimeter. No occupants were found inside the crushed vehicle. MGE notified. 

2:03 PM – 1220 East Mifflin Street – Ladder 8 finds power lines down. Area is taped off, and MGE is notified. 

2:04 PM – 5014 Raymond Road - E7 investigated wire down in back yard. Found downed power line arcing and causing vegetation around it to burn. E7 stood by until MGE arrived.

2:06 PM – 237 Waubesa Street – Large limb took out power line. MGE took over the scene.

2:07 PM – 107 S. Franklin Street – Engine 3 finds a 60-foot uprooted tree resting across the street on wires between 2 poles, pulling both poles inward. E3 requested City Forestry and MGE. E3 stayed on scene till MGE arrived.

2:12 PM – 3218 Atwood Avenue – Power line down. Engine 5 secured the area and contacted MGE. 

2:12 PM – 121 S. Brittingham Place – Engine 4 finds a tree limb fell on a power line. The limb on the line was creating a small about of smoke. E4 instructed the homeowners to contact MGE repair the line. 

2:14 pm – S. Brooks Street & Vilas Avenue – While responding to another call, Ladder 1 finds a tree on a parked car at this location. After finishing the original call, Ladder 1 circles back to this location to check the car. It is unoccupied, and there are no power lines down around it. Scene is blocked off with “Caution" tape. 

2:17 PM – 1234 Sycamore Avenue & MacArthur Road - Called for a transformer fire during lightning storm. Caller pointed out transformer. No smoke or fire noted. No wires down. No further action taken.

2:20 PM – 584 Banding Lane – Engine 10 and Medic 8 were dispatched to a tree on a home. Upon arrival, E10 verified that there was a tree with minimal intrusion on the back of mobile home. No injuries were reported and M8 was cancelled. Engine 10 put out “Caution" tape to keep individuals away from the downed tree limb. The owners were informed to contact insurance and an arborist. 

2:17 PM – S. Park Street & Drake Street – Engine 1 finds a tree down on a residential supply line that had become disconnected from a home. No arcing, sparking, or fire. E1 secured the scene with “Caution" tape and became available for the next call. 

2:17 PM - 313 Price Place – Engine 12 was dispatched for wires down on top of cars in a parking lot. Upon arrival, E12 saw a downed wire on top of several cars in a parking lot. There was also a tree branch lying on a car in the lot. E12 determined it was a communication wire. E12 coiled the wire up and returned.

2:17 PM – 3865 Nakoma Road – Ladder 2 finds a large tree had fallen on two parked vehicles and was obstructing traffic. Down wires were also noted; however, wires were completely stripped from the utility pole. L2 checked damaged vehicles for occupants with none found. MPD officers remained on scene. L2 returned available for service.

2:17 PM – 2113 Rusk Street – Engine 11 responded for the report wires down. No active arcing. City of Madison Streets notified. 

2:26 PM – 4214 Mohawk Drive - E4 was dispatched to this location for downed power line caused by a fallen tree limb. The tree limb was also partially on the house, and the homeowners were not home. E4 secured the area with scene tape and instructed the communications center to contact MGE to repair the line. 

2:27 PM – 49 Cherokee Circle – Engine 11 responded for someone stuck in an elevator. No injuries reported. E11 shut off the power to the elevator in the control room, opened the hoist way door to locate the car, and lowered the hydraulic elevator car to the parking garage lower level to get both people and their dog out of the elevator. 

2:28 PM – Windigo Trail & Pontiac Trail – Ladder 7 finds a large tree limb had fallen into the power lines and had snapped a power pole. Power lines were down across a span of four poles and some were actively sparking. MPD was also on scene at this time and L7 asked them to block traffic at Pontiac Trail and Onaway Pass. L7 taped off the intersection at Pontiac Trail and Windigo Trail, then proceeded to block Southbound traffic on Pontiac Trail. Residents, pedestrians, and vehicles were kept from the area. MGE notified.

2:31 PM – 1130 Monica Lane – Ladder 8 dispatched for lines down. Area is taped off and MGE is notified. 

2:35 PM – 418 Holly Avenue – Elevator rescue. Engine 9 shut down the main power to the elevator and removed three people. E9 shut all elevator doors and left the power to the car off.

2:37 PM – 1309 Wheeler Road – Engine 10 was dispatched to the backyard of a home for report of wires down. E10 observed that there was a top of the pole wire down in the backyard of the caller's home , and a pole located a few houses down was badly damaged. Individuals in neighboring homes were informed of the danger and instructed to stay out of their backyards. Fire scene tape was set up between four homes to keep people out of the backyards. E10 then proceeded to the next block over and again informed occupants of the danger and placed fire scene tape between the four homes directly behind the others. MGE notified.

2:40 PM – 121 S. Brittingham Place – Engine 1 called for a storm-related branches on a residential electrical supply line with sparking and flames visible; however, Engine 1 was diverted to a Lake Rescue call. 

2:41 PM – 2217 Aspen Road – Engine 7 investigated a tree branch on a power line. Line was still intact and house still had power. Homeowner notified MGE. No imminent hazard found.

2:43 PM – Monona Drive & East Dean Avenue – Engine 5 called for a power line down. E5 secured the area and contacted MGE. 

2:48 PM – 5402 Lake Mendota Drive – The MFD Lake Rescue Team and other MFD units, plus Middleton Fire, were dispatched to the report of a boater in distress in the area of Spring Harbor on Lake Mendota. E9 arrived first on scene and made contact with residents in the vicinity. No emergency found.

2:51 PM - 1314 Droster – Engine 5 called to this location for a down power line after a storm. E5 secured the area and contacted MGE.

2:57 PM – 6302 Old Sauk Road – Ladder 2 find power line brought down by a fallen tree. No arcing or other hazards were noted upon arrival. The area was secured, and MGE was notified to respond. L2 remained on scene until the situation was deemed safe.

3:00 – 233 Waubesa Street – Engine 11 responded from across the city for the report of an extinguished fire on a water heater, with a tree causing power outage. A worker from MGE met us on location to state that the fire was out and he secured the gas. No elevated heat signatures were found. E11 removed some charred wood trim and placed it outside. 

3:03 PM – 1919 Arlington Place – Engine 9 called to this area for power lines down. They were found to be cable wires. E9 removed them from the sidewalk.

3:03 PM – 2513 Seiferth Road – Engine 5 responded to this location for a down power line. E5 secured the area and contacted MGE.

3:03 PM – 1300 block Wheeler Road – Individual unable to get out of powered recliner due to power outage. Medic 10 assists individual out of their chair. 

3:05 PM – 1025 Blaine Drive – Engine 10 dispatched for wires down. Upon arrival, E10 noted that they were communication lines and taped off the sidewalk where they were down. E10 also noted that there was a tree limb on the power service into the home. The home did still have power but the resident was informed to contact MGE to have the limb removed.

3:07 PM – 2661 South Court – Ladder 8 dispatched for report of wires down. Ladder 8 tapes off the area, and MGE is notified. 

3:20 PM – 2901 Saint Paul Ave. – Ladder 8 responds for wires down. Ladder 8 taped off the area and MGE was notified. 

3:26 PM – 600 Highland Avenue – Engine 9 and other MFD units respond for report of smoke in the building. E9 confirms with UW Security that the “smoke" was from an extinguisher that someone released. E9 confirms it is extinguisher dust. E9 later made multiple returns to this address for errant alarm activations due to extinguisher dust. 

3:30 PM – 825 Jupiter Drive – Sidewalk light post knocked over with wires exposed. No arcing or fire. Firefighters taped off the post and notified maintenance staff.

3:43 PM – 420 Paunack Place – Engine 4 was dispatched to this location for downed power line caused by a fallen tree limb. The homeowners were not home. E4 secured the area with scene tape and MGE was notified.

3:50 PM – 3870 Nakoma Road – Engine 6 dispatched for wires and tree branches down. Area had already been coned off and tagged with “Caution" tape. No arcing or smoking noted. No further action taken.

4:18 PM – 1300 block Wheeler Road – Engine 10 and Medic 10 called to help a resident who needed help charging their medical equipment during a power outage. 

4:21 PM – 262 Waubesa Street – Engine 5 responded for a down power line after a storm. The area was secured, and MGE was notified. 

4:42 PM – 5000 block Sheboygan Avenue – Engine 9 assists an individual to their apartment who could not use the elevator due to a power outage. 

4:45 PM – 410 Shepard Terrace – Engine 4 dispatched to this location for downed power line caused by a fallen tree limb. The homeowners were not home. E4 secured the area with scene tape and MGE was notified.

5:08 PM – 3433 Edgehill Parkway – Engine 9 called for a down power line. E9 taped off the area and notified MGE. Shorewood PD was also on location.

5:11 PM – Commonwealth Ave & Harrison Street – Engine 4 dispatched to this location for downed wires due to fallen tree limb. E4 instructed the occupant to contact MGE to repair the line. E4 returned to service.

5:13 PM – 4730 LaFayette Drive – Ladder 2 arrived on scene and observed a power line that had been brought down by a fallen tree. No arcing or other hazards were noted upon arrival. The area was secured, and MGE was notified to respond. L2 remained on scene until the situation was deemed safe and then returned available.

5:25 PM – 27 S. Fourth Street – Engine 3 dispatched for lines down. Upon arrival we found power lines two feet from the ground wrapped in a downed tree branch. E3 placed “Caution" tape on both sides of the street and sidewalk and MGE was notified.

6:22 PM – 1609 Jefferson Street – Engine 4 was dispatched to this location for downed power line caused by a fallen tree limb. Upon arrival, E4 found a large tree limb that had knocked down power and communications lines. E4 instructed the occupant to contact MGE to repair the line.

6:41 PM – 3421 Circle Close – Engine 4 dispatched to this location for a tree branch on a power line. Upon arrival E4 found a small tree branch on a power line. The line was not sagging or smoking. Shorewood Police stated they will contact MGE to remove the branch.

6:42 PM – 626 Langdon Street – Alarm investigation. Engine 1 found water leaking through the roofing material as a result of the severe thunderstorm that occurred hours before. Property manager was on site and was advised to contact the alarm company to have a service technician respond. 

6:53 PM – 508 Powers Ave. – Engine 5 responded for a down power line after a storm. The area was secured and MGE was notified. 

6:55 PM - 1317 N. Sherman Avenue – Engine 10 responded for a tree on a power line. E10 observed that a large tree limb was on the incoming service line to the home. The overhead mast was ripped from the home, and the power line was on the porch roof. E10 attempted to make contact with the occupant but they were not home. The area was taped off, and MGE was notified. 

7:41 PM - 21 S. Eau Claire Avenue – Engine 9 responded for a tree that fell and took down some power lines in the backyard of this address. Power lines were hot and smoking. E9 informed all surrounding homes not to enter their backyards until MGE took care of the down wires.
