Goodwin Stepping Down After 33 Years of Public Service

Madison - Mayor Dave Cieslewicz today wished a happy retirement to Interim Human Resources Director Roger Goodwin who is retiring on August 3 after 33 years of public service that included positions in federal, state, and local government. "Roger possessed a remarkable breadth and depth of experience in public service, and he will be missed," said Mayor Cieslewicz. "The public was well served by his expertise, and policy makers such as myself benefited greatly from his institutional knowledge as well as his sunny optimism. I wish him well in his well-earned retirement from public life." Goodwin's work for the City of Madison started in 1980 when he was hired as an internal auditor/program evaluator in the former Department of Administration. He later became a budget analyst and went on to fill a number of special roles, such as helping start Mayor Joe Sensenbrenner's Quality Improvement Program, working as Acting Manager of the Energy Recovery Plant and helping the Streets Division plan for their new curbside recycling program. In 1990, Goodwin took a full-time position at the Streets Division as Streets Operations Manager and became Interim Street Superintendent in 1991. He served as Streets Superintendent from 1991 - 2004 when he was appointed to his current position. Prior to his employment with the City, Goodwin worked for the State Legislative Audit Bureau and for a regional plan commission in Escanaba, Michigan. Goodwin served his country as a Vietnam veteran with two years of service in the Marine Corps. "I have been very fortunate to serve the City in a wide variety of challenging positions from finance and budgeting to public works management to human resources management," said Goodwin. "The City of Madison has been a great employer. I will miss working with so many dedicated employees at all levels of the City, and I look forward to serving the community in other ways in my retirement."
