Five People Displaced After Electrical Fire

Five people were displaced and $30,000 of damage was done to a 2-flat apartment, after an electrical fire occurred to the structure.
 
City of Madison Firefighters were notified shortly after 12:00 pm on Monday of a house fire at 200 S. Mills Street.
 
Two people were home in the upstairs apartment, when they heard crackling noises and noticed burn marks in the ceiling. They evacuated the building and called 911 Communications Center to report the fire. No one was home in the 1st floor apartment.
 
As fire crews approached the two story wooden structure, light smoke was visible from the eves and roof area. Engine 4 made entry, pulling a charged hand line up to the second floor, where white smoke was visible. Medic 1 checked the basement for signs of fire while Engine 1 secured a hydrant for water supply. Ladder 1 assisted Engine 4 in fire attack. A search was made by crew members to ensure all occupants were out of the building.
 
The fire was in the attic area, which was quickly knocked down. If the residents were not home at the time the fire broke out, the fire could have burned through the roof and caused major damage to the building, caused injuries, or have threatened other buildings.
 
The Fire Investigator concluded that the cause of the fire was a result of an overloaded electrical circuit.
