August Moving Days: How to Use the Large Item Work Order System during the Move Out

posted

Beginning on August 7, 2023, large item work order rules will be different for residents who live in the downtown move-out area and disposing of items that are collected at no cost.  This change will end on the morning of Friday, August 18, 2023.

There are no changes to the work order rules for large items that require a fee, like microwaves and air conditioners.

Residents who do not live in the downtown student move out area will see no changes in the large item work order system.

Curbside Pickup for Items that Do Not Require a Fee
Most large items do not require a fee for collection. This includes couches, chairs, desks, mattresses, tables, area rugs, plastic shelving units, and many other items.

If you live in the student move out area, you will not be required to complete a work order between August 7, 2023 and 6:30am Friday, August 18, 2023 for large items that do not require a fee.

Crews will be regularly roaming through the student move out area during these times collecting material from the curb.

What should do you after 6:30am, Friday August 18, 2023 with large items in the student move area?
In order to have your large items collected after the above date and time, you must complete a work order to get your home on the pickup schedule.

You should submit the work order before you set the items out to the curb for pick up. Each week has a limited number of work orders crews can fulfill, and setting the item out early contributes to neighborhood clutter.

Failure to submit work order for your large items once the above date and time passes can result in fines from Building Inspection.

Drop-off for Items That Do Not Require a Fee
If you are bringing items to a drop-off site that are free, you do not need to fill out a work order form. This is the normal procedure throughout the year for dropping off items that are accepted without a fee at the sites. Be sure to follow all other drop-off site rules and restrictions.

Use the Work Order System for Items That Require a Fee
If you live in the student move-out area, you still need to use the large item work order system to pay for the items that require a fee.

Fees can also be paid over the phone, or in-person by visiting the either the Streets East or Streets West offices.

The items that require a fee include microwaves, air conditioners, and other items.

Check the Streets Division’s website for a full list of items that require a fee.

Curbside Pickup for Items that Require a Fee
If you would like an item that requires a fee picked up from the curb, like a microwave or window air conditioning unit, complete the work order.

Choose one of the set-out date options available to you, and set the item out for pickup on the date you selected.

You will not receive a fee sticker in the mail after you schedule the curbside pickup.

Crews will know which items have had their fees paid when they arrive.

Collection will occur during the work week following the set-out date you choose.

Drop-off for Items Requiring a Fee
If you use the online work order form to pay the fee for certain items, and you will be taking the item a drop-off site, you will be mailed a fee sticker to the valid City of Madison address you entered into the work order.

You must to wait until you receive the fee sticker(s) before you can take them item that requires a fee to the site.

Drop-off site staff cannot sell fee stickers.

Stickers can be purchased in person at either the Streets East or Streets West offices.

What if you do not live in the student move out area?
