Grace Olson Central Artist-in-Residence Spring 2024

MADISON, WI -- The Bubbler at Madison Public Library is welcoming a new Artist-in-Residence at Central Library for the Spring. Grace Olson is an experimental, multi-media artist, writer, music maker, and childcare worker from Madison who will be in-residence in the Bubbler Room on the ground floor of Central Library February-May 2024. Olson’s residency is titled Family Reunion, and will reimagine and celebrate family in all the forms it can take.

“During my residency, everyone will be invited to take part in creative projects that explore the ways we all find, make, experience, and practice family,” said Olson. “My intention as a facilitator is to shed light on the unconventional and to encourage change. We’ll ask ourselves questions about who is in our lineage, where we find a sense of home, and what heirlooms or artifacts we pass on to others.”

Many of Olson’s projects will be anchored in collage and multimedia 3-D making. There are multiple opportunities to interact with her throughout the residency, including ongoing passive projects, a booklist, open studio hours and specialty workshops.

Welcome Home Installation

As part of the residency, Olson has created an ongoing installation outside of the Bubbler Room called Welcome Home. It takes the form of a vintage, handmade dollhouse that visitors can make mini elements for using Bubbler Room materials. This project is available anytime the Central Library is open.

Open Studio Hours:

Wednesdays, February 21 - May 29, 6-8pm | Bubbler Room at Central Library

During open studio hours, community members are welcome to drop-in and interact with the artist, who will be present and offering projects for people to participate in. No registration is required for these programs.

The Bubbler Room is open to the public whenever the Central Library is open. It is closed to the public only temporarily for any scheduled workshops and/or community partner site visits.

Workshops:

Sculpey Workshop: Making Minis

March 3, 1-4pm | Bubbler Room at Central Library

In a museum exhibit about your life, what objects, heirlooms, and artifacts would you want on display? What stories would those pieces have to tell? In this workshop, local artist Jayce Thoyre will demonstrate how to create a miniature model using Sclupey clay. The models you create can be taken home afterward or added to the miniature dollhouse installation, Welcome Home, outside the Bubbler Room. Registration required; spaces limited. REGISTER

Snail Mail Art Workshop

March 17, 1-3pm | Bubbler Room at Central Library

Come in from the cold to share space, get cozy, and make contact with the folks in your life who you’ve been meaning to reach out to forever. Bring an address—or a list of addresses!—and join us in creating mailable cards, postcards, and other mixed-media artwork. No registration required; all ages are welcome.

Additional workshops may be added as the residency continues. Read more about the artist, the Family Reunion theme, and the Bubbler at madisonbubbler.org/residencies/central.

Residencies at Central Library are supported by the Evjue Foundation and Madison Arts Commission.
