Large Item Fees Changed in 2024

As a reminder, large item fees changed in 2024.

If you pay the Resource Recovery Special Charge on your monthly Municipal Services bill, this means you will not need to pay for fees for certain large items when you drop them off at the Streets Division sites, or when you schedule them for curbside collection.  The special charge you are paying covers the costs related to these items.

If you do not pay the Resource Recovery Special Charge, then you will still need to pay the fees for these items before you bring them to a drop-off site, and when you schedule curbside pickup.

It is easy to tell if you pay the Resource Recovery Special Charge.

If your recycling is collected by the City of Madison Streets Division, then you pay the Resource Recovery Special Charge.  Check the cart at your home to verify if it is a City of Madison cart.  If it is green and has the City of Madison logo on it – then it is a City cart.

If your home has metal dumpsters, or if your recycling is collected by a private company, then you do not pay the Resource Recovery Special Charge and you will still need to pay the necessary fee for these select items.

Fee Sticker Sales Not Available in Drop-off Sites

If you are required to pay a fee and you are dropping off an item that requires one, like a microwave, you need to purchase the recycling fee sticker in advance. Fee stickers cannot be purchased from the drop-off site staff.

A full list of the items that require a fee can be found on the large item collection website, www.cityofmadison.com/LargeItem.

How to Purchase Recycling Fee Stickers

You can purchase the sticker online in advance at www.cityofmadison.com/LargeItemWorkOrder.

You can also purchase the sticker in person at Streets Division offices, or over the phone.  The Streets Division offices are located at 1501 W. Badger Rd and 4602 Sycamore Ave. They are open 7:30am to 4:00pm Monday to Friday.

You can call us at 608-246-4532 or 608-266-4681 to make the purchase over the phone. The phone lines are staffed from 7:00am to 4:00pm Monday to Friday.
