An overwhelming response to the City of Madison’s call for volunteers to help paint State Street for the upcoming pedestrian mall experiment means registration for the event is now closed.

As of Wednesday morning, more than 600 people have signed up to leave their mark on State Street and help a group of local Madison artists get the 400-600 blocks of State Street ready for this summer’s pedestrian mall experiment.

“We are thrilled that so many people have signed up to take advantage of this opportunity and we can’t wait to see so much of the community turn out to make this space truly unique and special,” City of Madison Urban Design Planner Rebecca Cnare said. “We also hope that everyone will #FlocktoState Street this summer to see the street art and join in on all of the summer activities and events that Downtown Madison has to offer!”

Volunteers will split up between two shifts on Sunday, April 21, with one group painting from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the other group painting from Noon to 3 p.m.

Those who were unable to sign up before registration closed can sign up for e-mail alerts on the Madison Arts website to be notified of other events in the future.

The pedestrian mall experiment is slated to begin in early May. More details will be released in the coming weeks.
