Lane Closures on Fish Hatchery Road for Cannonball Path Extension Project

Beginning Monday, August 17, motorists traveling on Fish Hatchery Road can expect lane closures as construction begins on the Cannonball Path extension project.

The project will extend the existing Cannonball Path across Fish Hatchery Road to connect with the Wingra Creek Path. This connection is the final piece of the approximately four-mile Cannonball Path, creating a continuous shared-use path linking Fitchburg and Madison's Arbor Hills neighborhood with downtown Madison.

In addition to the shared-use path, the project includes:

• Installation of a sanitary sewer across Fish Hatchery Road.
• Construction of a new traffic signal at the Carver Street and Fish Hatchery Road intersection.
• Bridge improvements over Wingra Creek to improve the shared-use path crossing and connection to the Wingra Creek Path.

Traffic impacts

Both northbound and southbound traffic will be maintained on Fish Hatchery Road throughout construction. For most of the project, traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction. Motorists should expect delays and allow additional time when traveling through the construction area.

Metro Transit bus stops within the project limits will remain open throughout construction.

The project is expected to be completed in spring 2027. Construction schedules are subject to change due to weather and other factors.

Once complete, the project will provide an important connection in Madison's bicycle and pedestrian network, improving access between neighborhoods, trails and destinations throughout the area.
