Street Closures for IRONMAN Weekend – September 12–13

Several streets in and around downtown Madison will be closed for IRONMAN events on Saturday, September 12, and Sunday, September 13.

The IRONMAN 70.3 Wisconsin (half triathlon) will take place on Saturday, and the IRONMAN Wisconsin (full triathlon) will take place on Sunday. Both events begin with a swim in Lake Monona, followed by a bicycle course extending into western Dane County and a run course through Madison.

Motorists should expect significant travel impacts along the race routes throughout the weekend. Police and race officials will maintain local access across the routes when possible during gaps between athletes. Through traffic will not be permitted to cross active portions of the racecourse.

John Nolen Drive Closure

Details:

  • Saturday, September 12 from 7:00am - 1:30pm
  • Sunday, September 13 from 7:00am - 5:30pm
  • The northbound detour will be in place during the bike portions of the IRONMAN races to allow IRONMAN bicyclists a route out of and back into town during the John Nolen Drive reconstruction project.
  • Southbound traffic remains open on John Nolen Drive at all times.
  • Two-way traffic remains open on John Nolen Drive north of North Shore Drive.
  • John Nolen Drive will be fully open at 1:30pm on Saturday, in advance of heavy inbound traffic for the University of Wisconsin Madison football game at 6:30pm

Downtown Street Closures - Prior to Event

In addition to the race-day closures, the following streets near the IRONMAN finish area will close in advance of the events:

  • Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard between Doty Street and Wilson Street will be closed beginning 8:00 am Wednesday, September 9.
  • Wilson Street between Pinckney Street and Carroll Street will be closed beginning at 6:00 am Saturday, September 12.
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard between Main Street and Doty Street will be closed beginning at 2:30 pm Saturday, September 12.

These closures will remain in place through the IRONMAN weekend.

Saturday, September 12 – IRONMAN 70.3 Wisconsin

The Saturday race begins at approximately 7:00 am and is expected to conclude by approximately 5:00 pm

Bicycle Route Closures

Closures for the bicycle portion of the race will generally be in place from approximately 7:00 am until 1:30 pm

Race Maps

The following closures will be in place within the City of Madison:

  • Northbound John Nolen Drive from Olin Avenue to North Shore Drive
    • Northbound motorists will be detoured west on Olin Avenue to Park Street.
    • The left turn from Broom Street to northbound John Nolen Drive will remain open throughout the weekend.
  • Wingra Creek Path
    • Capital City Trail users will be detoured via Olin-Turville Court and Lakeside Street.

  • Olin-Turville Court
  • East Rusk Avenue from the Alliant Energy Center driveway to Rimrock Road
  • Rimrock Road ramps to and from the Beltline

There are no street closures associated with the swimming portion of the race.

Run Route Closures

Road closures for the running portion of the race will begin at approximately 9:00 am and will remain in place until approximately 5:00 pm

  • Jenifer Street from Blount Street to Livingston Street
  • Spaight Street from Jenifer Street to Ingersoll Street
  • Ingersoll Street from Spaight Street to Rutledge Street
  • Rutledge Street from Ingersoll Street to Baldwin Street
  • Baldwin Street from Rutledge Street to Morrison Street
  • Morrison Street from Baldwin Street to Thornton Avenue
  • Thornton Avenue from Morrison Street to the cul-de-sac north of Williamson Street
  • Marston Avenue from Sherman Avenue to East Johnson Street
  • Carroll Street from Doty Street to Wilson Street

Additional portions of the run course use off-street paths and other areas where traffic restrictions may be in place.

Sunday, September 13 – IRONMAN Wisconsin

The full-distance IRONMAN Wisconsin will take place Sunday. Race-related closures will begin early Sunday morning, with portions of the run course remaining closed until approximately midnight.

Bicycle Route Closures

Closures for the bicycle portion of the race will generally be in place from approximately 7:00 am until 5:30 pm

Metro Transit

Several Metro Transit routes will be detoured during the events. Riders should check Metro Transit's IRONMAN detour information for affected routes and stops.
