City of Madison Recognizes World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims

posted

The City of Madison's Vision Zero initiative will recognize the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims during the week of remembrance, November 9 – 15. Madison will join many communities around the world in honoring those who have lost their lives or been seriously injured in traffic crashes and standing in solidarity with the families, friends, and loved ones left behind.

As part of this observance, Vision Zero Madison will install a public display to remember lives lost on our roadways, raise awareness about the devastating impacts of traffic crashes, and encourage the community to reflect on the shared responsibility we all have to make our streets safer. This display brings that reality into focus and reminds us that traffic deaths are not inevitable. They are preventable, and every life matters.

In Madison, we get to school and work by walking, biking, bussing, or driving. Our streets need to be safe for everyone," said Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway. “Through Vision Zero Madison, we are working toward a future where no one has to experience the devastating loss of a loved one because of a traffic crash. One life lost is too many, and we all have a role to play in making Vision Zero a reality.

Safety awareness is an essential part of this effort. Slowing down, yielding to pedestrians, avoiding distractions, driving sober, wearing seat belts, and looking out for vulnerable road users are actions we can all take to save lives.  The City is prioritizing smarter street design and transportation systems, in addition to education and enforcement, so everyone can travel safely in Madison.

The City encourages residents to take time during the week of remembrance to view the display, honor those affected by traffic violence, and consider the ways individual choices and community action can help prevent future tragedies.
