Where are you stationed?

I am currently stationed at Fire Station 12 (South Point Rd.) on the 'B' shift. Previously at Fire Station 7 (McKenna Blvd.) and Fire Station 1 (W. Dayton St.).

What are some unique qualities or characteristics about your territory, and how do they shape your service to the neighborhood?

One of the biggest unique qualities about this territory- especially compared to Station 1's territory, which is where I was prior to 7 and 12- is the transport time to the hospital. This drives home the importance of quick assessments and getting the patient ready to transport so that when the ambulance arrives, they are ready to go.

How has your previous education or work experience prepared you for this career?

I feel that going to school for psychology has helped me be able to be more empathetic toward patients and talk with them about their situation, especially on calls that have a mental health side to them.

Have you always wanted to be a firefighter/EMT? If not, what other careers were of interest to you?

Growing up, I always wanted to be in the military. I enlisted in the Marines out of high school and enjoyed my 4 years of service. I was also interested in the mental health field, which is what brought me to the University of Wisconsin. While there, I realized that I missed serving and wanted to serve my community, which led me down the path to becoming a firefighter.

What do you do when you're not working at MFD?

I like to spend time with my wife walking our two dogs, reading books, and watching football.

Do you have a favorite book or movie that you would recommend? Why?

I would say my favorite movie has to be Remember the Titans. I loved playing football growing up, and it has a great message about a community coming together and putting aside their differences.
