Incident Details

MFD responded to the Dane County Sanitary Landfill at 7102 Maahic Way for reports of a black smoke cloud in the area. An employee happened to be driving by and met Ladder 14 to confirm there was a working fire inside the landfill.

Ladder 14 ascended to the top of the landfill and found a 50'x50' section of garbage and rubbish on fire. Due to the amount of fire, additional MFD units, two mutual aid tenders, and a mutual aid brush truck were requested to the scene.

Ladder 14 continued suppression efforts with assistance from Medic 5 and McFarland Fire's tender. 500 gallons of water and foam were applied. On-site personnel used heavy equipment to dig and move materials around to expose hot spots for firefighters.

MFD Engine 13 and McFarland's brush truck were deployed to address additional fires that started to the south of the original fire. Another 750 gallons of water and foam were flowed to completely control the fire. Site managers brought in soil to smother remaining hot spots.

After firefighters collected equipment and picked up hose, the scene was turned over to site managers.
