Week of September 7, 2026

District Niners,

By now, you know that the candle is beginning to flicker and dim for summer activities and fall is in the air.  It has been a very busy week!  Of note, “a seat at the table" for project(s) in district nine is being proposed with opportunities to provide input from constituents is in the planning stages.  Scheduling venues for constituent and developer interactions will become clearer within the coming two weeks.  Until then, relax and feel free to walk about the cabin. 

Updates and Notices

• All City of Madison Administrative offices are closed for the Labor Day holiday. If there is only a need for emergency services, please call 911.
• Emergency Water Issue: Call Madison Water Utility at 608-266-4665, 24/7.
• Sanitary Sewer Back-up: Call 608-266-4430.  An emergency crew will respond to your call.
• Report non-emergencies that can wait until the next City working day.

Boards, Commissions, and Committee Meetings

• Common Council: The Common Council meeting will take place on Tuesday, September 8, at 6:30 p.m. in hybrid format.
• Devine Nzegwu will be sworn in as Alder for District 1.
• The City Council will consider authorizing the Economic Development Division to administer a Williamson Street Business Stabilization Support Program and transferring $28,500 from the contingent reserve to the Office of the Independent Monitor.
• The Board of Public Works meeting will take place on Wednesday, September 9, at 4:30 p.m. in virtual format and consider adopting the City of Madison Pedestrian Plan and adopting the City of Madison Safe Routes to School Strategic Plan.
• The Board of Park Commissioners will meet on Wednesday, September 9, at 6:30 p.m. in virtual format and consider adopting the Southeast Area Park Development 

Announcements and News Releases

• The IRONMAN Triathlon weekend competition is on tap for Saturday and Sunday (September 12th and 13th.  If your travels take you anywhere near the capital, Monona Terrace, downtown streets, be prepared for traffic staging, street closures, etc., so pack your patience. 
• Gregory McClain has been appointed Civil Rights Director: McClain has more than a decade of experience in advancing racial equity, social justice, equal employment, and public health initiatives.
• Here's hoping that you have a chance to rev up your tastebuds and partake in the annual Taste of Madison.
• Madison Fire Department's 10th Ambulance is now in service and stationed in downtown Madison. 
• Plan a trip to the downtown Madison Central Public Library for the Quilting Exhibit.  The exhibit is focused on Memory, Stories, and Personal Narratives. The Bubbler at Madison Public Library hosted an opening reception on Thursday, September 3 from 4-6pm for the new exhibition which opened in the Diane Endres-Ballweg Gallery on the 3rd floor of Central Library.            
• It is NOT too late to take part in the Smart Trips Challenge. Try a New Way to Get Around This September: Bike, ride the bus, carpool, walk or roll your way to prizes during the 2026 Smart Trips Challenge! 
• CARES celebrates 5 Years Providing Alternative Emergency Services in Madison: Madison's Community Alternative Response Emergency Services program, popularly known as CARES, turned five years on September 1, 2026. CARES has been warmly embraced by the community and enthusiastically supported by local leaders since its implementation.

Your well-being

According to public health officials, measles outbreaks are on the rise in Wisconsin.  Please, if your child(ren) has/have not been vaccinated, consider getting them vaccinated, and, it's time to plan for Fall and Winter immunizations (flu, COVID and RSV for seniors). Remember, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. And lastly, activate your smile because if you do not have wrinkles, you have not laughed enough.
