CARBON MONOXIDE INCIDENT

Location: Royster Oaks Drive
Date: 09/29/2026
Time: 06:07:39 AM
Responding Unit: L8

L8 responded to Royster Oaks Drive for a reported carbon monoxide alarm.

Upon arrival, L8 met with the resident, who reported that the carbon monoxide/smoke detector had been sounding intermittently for more than 24 hours, beginning sometime Sunday. The resident had contacted maintenance, and someone was expected to respond later that day. She called 911 after realizing the device was a smoke/carbon monoxide detector. The resident reported experiencing a mild headache and was the sole occupant of the apartment.

L8 investigated the apartment and detected carbon monoxide levels of up to 70 ppm. A gas-fired furnace was located inside a locked closet in a bedroom. The furnace was not operating, and the thermostat was in the off position. The apartment also contained an electric range and clothes dryer.

L8 investigated the basement mechanical areas and found the water heaters located inside a locked mechanical room. Carbon monoxide levels of approximately 90 ppm were detected in this area.

L8 ventilated the apartment using a PPV fan. The mechanical areas were ventilated naturally and with the assistance of a small blower unit.

MGE arrived and conducted further investigation. MGE identified abnormally high carbon monoxide readings from the exhaust system. Building management and maintenance personnel were contacted.

L8 cleared the scene after MGE assumed responsibility for further investigation.

Remember: Carbon monoxide cannot be seen, smelled, or tasted. A working CO alarm provides an important warning when dangerous levels of CO are present.
