Firefighters Find Cooker Melting On Stovetop, No One Home, In Campus-Area Apartment

Firefighters responded to an apartment at 45 N. Orchard Street for reports of a smoke odor. 

Evacuation was in progress as Engine 4 arrived on scene. Firefighters entered the building and located the affected apartment. Nobody was home at the time. 

Firefighters made entry and found an electric cooker on the stovetop with the stovetop burner in the “on" position. The stove burner was red hot, and the cooker was partially melted and smoking. Firefighters removed the electric cooker from the apartment and brought it outside. Windows were opened to ventilate the apartment and remove the smoke. 

Ladder 1 assisted with ventilation and resetting the building's alarm system. 

Occupants were permitted to re-enter the building once the incident was resolved.
