Meet Firefighter/EMT Aaron Funseth
posted
Where are you stationed?
Currently assigned to Engine 5 (Cottage Grove Road), on the ‘B' shift.
What sparked your passion for the fire service and EMS?
I have deep family roots in my hometown and am proud to be part of the fifth generation of firefighters in my family. Growing up, hearing the fire whistle and watching family and neighbors rush to help inspired me. Their stories stayed with me, and I knew firefighting would be a meaningful way to give back to my community.
Why did you choose Madison Fire Department?
I chose MFD because I wanted to grow as a firefighter and serve more people than my previous roles allowed. MFD offers so much to learn, and I was drawn to being part of a large, diverse, professional department that truly cares for its members and the community.
How would you describe your recruit class?
Family. We came in as strangers and left as family. We took care of each other every day. There wasn't one day where someone was left out or not taken care of. It was amazing to be a part of such a diverse group of people and all come out as one.
What are you most excited about as you transition from recruit to firefighter/EMT?
I'm most excited about station life, hands-on experience, and the chance to use the EMT skills we worked so hard to build in academy. I learn best by doing, and I'm looking forward to going on calls, building relationships, and getting to know the community and my coworkers.
How do you see your role within the fire department contributing positively to the Madison community?
I hope to bring a deep level of compassion and care to this role. In 2025, I was diagnosed with an aggressive blood cancer called Burkitt lymphoma, and my family experienced incredible support from our community and exceptional care from hospital staff. That experience helps me relate to people during some of their hardest moments. I want patients to know we are there to help in every way we can, and I'm grateful for the chance to give back to the community that cared for me and my family.
What is your earliest memory with a firefighter/EMT or paramedic, and how did it influence your desire to pursue this career?
My earliest memories of firefighting go back again to my family history and living in a small town. It is just something that has always been a life goal, to be able to help people when they need it. Also, the aspect of the camaraderie and family that you gain from this career is second to none.
