Firefighters Investigating Kitchen Fire on Southwest Side

The Madison Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at an apartment building on Muir Field Road.  

Firefighters entered the building at 3164 Muir Field Road and located an apartment on the third floor with black smoke showing through the door. 

Upon entering the apartment, Ladder 7 felt heat and found smoke banked from the ceiling to the floor. A thermal imaging camera identified that the source of the heat was the kitchen area. No flames were seen. 

Water can extinguishers were used to cool down the area of the heat source, which turned out to be the stovetop. 

No occupants were found inside the apartment. Fans were used to clear smoke from the apartment and adjacent hallways. 

The MFD Fire Investigation Team is working to determine what led to this incident.
