Meet Firefighter/EMT Samantha Mikkelson

Where are you stationed?
I am currently working at Station 7 (McKenna Blvd.) on the 'C' shift.

Where did you grow up?
Oregon, WI

What is your earliest memory with a firefighter/EMT or paramedic, and how did it influence your desire to pursue this career?
Oregon Safety Camp introduced me to the world of first responders and encouraged my interests. 

What sparked your passion for the fire service and EMS? 
I had originally wanted to be a police officer but realized that I liked the team aspect of firefighting as opposed to law enforcement, where it can be more individual. 

What did you do before working for MFD? 
I previously worked part-time at Oregon Area Fire and EMS District for two years and bartended at Wisconsin Brewing Company for six years. 

How did your previous education or work experience help prepare you for this role? 
I got my bachelor's in Biology with a minor in Spanish from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. I use my Biology degree for understanding anatomy and the processes occurring in the human body on EMS calls, and I practice my Spanish when I encounter Spanish speakers in the field. 

What was your favorite part of the recruit academy?
My favorite part of academy was pushing myself every day, refining skills with my classmates, and our class workouts.

What are you doing when you're not working? 
I enjoy training Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Judo. I also do leatherwork and play violin.

How do you see your role within the fire department contributing positively to the Madison community? 
I hope to be someone the fire department and the Madison community can rely on in any situation.
