Firefighter/EMT Sawyer Shikoski

Where are you stationed?
I am currently at Station 9 (Midvale Blvd.) on the ‘B' shift.

What did you do before working for MFD?
I worked at the Oshkosh Fire Department as a Firefighter/Paramedic for about a year, mainly on M16 and M15.

How did your previous education or work experience help prepare you for this role?
My previous education/experience at NWTC and the Oshkosh Fire Department naturally helped with gaining knowledge and real-world experience with firefighting and EMS, but that's not everything. All of my previous jobs taught me how to work well in a team and interact with the public.

What sparked your passion for the fire service and EMS?
My grandpa and my dad were/are in fire and EMS. This was a heavy influence, especially with seeing my dad's passion for the job when I was growing up.

Why did you choose Madison Fire Department?
I chose the Madison Fire Department because they have both great fire and EMS services. That, plus the city being diverse and fast-growing will give me the opportunity to improve my skills and help many people to the best of my abilities.

What is your biggest goal you want to accomplish in your first year with MFD?
I am pretty new to the city, so I want to learn more about the layout and the city in general. I think this will become increasingly helpful as my career progresses.

How do you see your role within the fire department contributing positively to the Madison community?
I will likely be activated as a paramedic midway through next year, so I see myself contributing more to the community by providing Advanced Life Support (ALS) care to people who need it.

What are you doing when you're not training?
When I am not training and have free time, I mainly like to spend time with my family. Fishing, bowling, watching sports, skating or playing hockey, reading, and listening to music are all things I find myself doing as well.
