Incident Details

Several residents in an east side duplex will be temporarily displaced after a fire broke out shortly after 3:00, Monday afternoon.

Crews responded to the 3800 block of Sunbrook Road for a report of a fire in the back of the home. One of the occupants called 911 after they tried to extinguish the fire.

As firefighters approached the home, they noticed heavy gray/black smoke from the back of the building. Ladder crews conducted a search and rescue of both sides of the duplex, finding no one inside. Engine crews stretched a hose line to the back of the home, where they found flames burning the siding which traveled up the eves, and into the attic. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and checked for extension to ensure the fire was out.

The residents, whose home suffered the fire damage, will be staying with family members until repairs are made. The residents on the other side of the duplex were allowed back into their home.

No injuries were reported as a result of the fire.

The cause of the fire was due to improper handling of grilling material. The duplex sustained up to $30,000 in damage.

MPD, MG&E and Alliant Energy also assisted at the scene.
