Updates

The MFD Fire Investigation Team has concluded this fire was likely the result of a lightning strike. Strong thunderstorms were moving through the area at the time of the incident. Initial reports from occupants indicated a television in the home "blew up" and started on fire. Engine 7's crew entered the residence and found the TV and the wall on which it was mounted in the living room had received significant damage. The drywall above the fireplace was blown off, exposing studs and insulation in the wall and exterior chimney space. There was a small amount of smoke and flames, which firefighters extinguished with a water can extinguisher.

Firefighters proceeded to the basement, where they found worsening smoke conditions and flames. Engine 7 cooled the space as they advanced to the seat of the fire, and the fire was quickly knocked down.

Damage is estimated at $100,000.

The Madison Fire Department Fire Investigation Team (FIT) is investigating this incident as a possible lightning strike. When firefighters entered the home, they found major damage to one of the walls where a TV once was, with drywall blown off the wall and insulation showing.

The investigation to confirm the cause continues.
