'Peer Support Awards' Celebrate MFD Members Giving Time to Help Others

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. We couldn't let the occasion come to a close without giving a shout out to the MFD Peer Support Team. The Peer Support Team was established in 2018 to provide confidential support to fellow firefighters/EMTs/paramedics going through challenging times. MFD members are encouraged to reach out to Peer Support if they find themselves struggling with work-related or other life matters that may be affecting their mental health and well-being. The team consists of active and retired members of the Madison Fire Department, as well as commissioned and non-commissioned members. They serve as a familiar support system and a pathway to other appropriate resources when needed. In collaboration with Fire Fighters Local 311, MFD and the City of Madison Employee Assistance Program (EAP) recently hosted an inaugural "Peer Support Awards" event to recognize the contributions of Peer Support Team members. The Peer Support Team's work largely happens behind the scenes, but it does not go unrecognized! This award recognizes the Peer Support member who has provided excellent care during check-ins, is seen as a trusted and respected resource amongst their department for outside support, and advocates and collaborates for the coordination of debriefings.

This Peer Support member is highly skilled at facilitating connections between EAP and individuals needing some additional support, as well as negotiating systemic changes that would increase access to mental health resources by individuals in their respective department. Rockstar Rookie: Lamar White
This award is given to newly recruited members of the team that have provided exceptional work and brought in strong energy and commitment to their role as peer support members. Leaving a Legacy: Linnea Anderson
As outstanding members of the team depart, this award honors individuals whose work, leadership, and dedication positively influenced the direction in which the team has transitioned over the years.

This award is given to a Peer Support member who can be relied upon for getting work done and is not afraid of facing the challenges of multiple simultaneous demands.
