Week of November 10, 2025: Willy St Safety Study Completion, Development Proposal for Winnebago and Merry Streets

Development Proposal for Winnebago and Merry Streets

This Tuesday, there will be a joint meeting of MNA and SASY’s Preservation & Development Committees to hear a proposal from Apex Properties for a six-story apartment building on the north side of Winnebago Street between Merry Street and the Yahara River. The proposal is in the very early stages, but it will be a chance to hear the plan and provide feedback. Of note, the Yahara Parkway is considered a landmark, therefore the Landmarks Commission would be a part of the approval process.

The meeting is Tuesday, November 11 at 6:30pm at Wil-Mar.

Williamson Street Safety Study Completion

Traffic Engineering recently completed the Williamson Street Safety Study that removed rush hours lanes (maintaining 24-hour parking) and presented their findings to the Transportation Commission last week. Although one component of the study failed due to a faulty speed sensor, there were many other traffic count sensors at various locations on the isthmus that provided good data.

The short summary is that speeds were lower on Willy Street with little additional congestion, and minimal additional traffic added to side streets and other area arterials. Thus, the Commission voted to keep rush hour lanes closed indefinitely. Traffic Engineering will work to add back some parking spots that were removed close to intersections, and further study removal of parking spaces on the north side of Willy Street opposite the Willy St Co-op, to better facilitate left turns while allowing through traffic to pass around left-turning traffic.

If you’d like to read more, you can review the presentation of the study results presented to the Transportation Commission, as well as the public survey results capturing feedback of drivers, bikers, pedestrians, residents and businesses.
