It's lung cancer awareness month - get screened and check your house for radon. Neighborhood association meetings this week. Parents' night out at West, and more!
postedHello neighbors,
November is lung cancer awareness month. Lung cancer takes more lives than breast, prostate, and colon cancers combined. But there are steps you can take to protect yourself:
- If you smoke, get the help you need to quit. It can take up to 10 attempts to finally break free, but it can be done!
- If you smoke now, or smoked until up to 15 years ago, talk with your doctor about getting a low dose chest CT scan. This is the only cancer screening that not only saves lives from the disease it was intended to, but also reduces “all cause” mortality, as it can pick up other issues, such as with the heart and lungs.
- Test your home for radon. In our area, nearly 50% of the homes have tested higher than 4pCiL of radon – above the EPA actionable limit. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among people who don’t smoke, and is synergistic with tobacco exposure for those who do, so everyone can reduce their lung cancer risk by reducing radon exposure.
- A radon mitigation system usually costs between $1500-$2000, and low-income households may be eligible for assistance.
