Open Space Permit

Open Space Park Event permits are for small, private events that need to reserve an open space in a Madison Park, without a shelter reservation. This permit allows for one temporary structure and amplified sound. 

Open Space permits are great for wedding ceremonies and other small private celebrations.

Do I need an Open Space permit?

You need an Open Space permit if:

  • You are requesting to reserve an area in a park, without a shelter reservation
  • You are planning to setup a temporary structure or use amplified sound in a park, without a shelter reservation

You qualify for the Open Space permit if:

  • The expected attendance is less than 200 people
  • The event is only one day
  • The event is not advertised to the public
  • The event does not have any vending and is not a fundraiser
  • The event will not use extensive space in the park
  • The event will have no more than one temporary structure

If the event does not qualify for the Open Space permit, then you will need to apply for a Park Event permit.

Submit to madisonevents@cityofmadison.com at least 30 days before event date.

Temporary Structure permit

  • No more than one temporary structure is allowed with the Open Space permit. 
  • Requesting a temporary structure requires submitting a site map with the application. 
  • If staking anything in a park, organizer is responsible for calling Digger's Hotline (811), 14-10 days before the event.

Amplified Sound permit

  • Sound limit: 75 dB, 150 ft from the source
