Wexford Park Non-Native Tree Removals

posted

Madison’s Parks Department notified me today about a program of tree removals in Wexford Park woods. The removals are part of an oak woodland restoration project that the Parks Ecology Team started in 2025. The focus of the restoration has been removal of invasive shrubs and trees like buckthorn, honeysuckle, and box elder. Last spring the team did a prescribed burn and introduced additional native seed to the area. As the project is progressing the crew is going to be removing some very large mulberry trees that are along the southern woods edge (see yellow highlight on map below) The trees are not native to the oak woodland ecosystem and interfere with oak regeneration. Overtime the team will plant some additional oak trees. Questions can be addressed to West Parks Superintendent Charlotte Blotz.
