Central District captain addresses recent burglaries, shootings

posted

The downtown and campus areas have experienced some major incidents recently.

Here's a message sharing information on these incidents from Central District Captain Kipp Hartman.

Burglaries

The Central District is seeing a significant increase in burglaries in the areas of Langdon and Gorham Streets. Many of these were the result of juveniles. In many instances, these groups located doors that were unlocked or unsecured.

As students look forward to leaving for spring break, we ask that everyone takes an extra minute to make sure doors are locked and valuables are secured.

Weapons violation

Also last week, officers responded to a weapons violation in the 100 block of Langdon St. During this incident, a 16-year-old shot himself while handling a firearm. The gun was recovered and a second juvenile with a firearm was located nearby. We are continuing to investigate this incident.

Homicide

Early Sunday morning, our department was notified of a woman found lying in a parking ramp with a gunshot wound. This woman ultimately died from her injuries. This was a targeted incident. The Violent Crime Unit led the investigation into this shooting and an arrest was made late Monday afternoon.

We understand these incidents can cause people to feel uneasy. We ask anyone living in the area to contact police if they notice any suspicious activity. We also ask any students living in the Central District to remember to lock-up or take valuable items with them as they head on Spring Break.
