  2. Written Test & Essay

    Everyone who completes an application is invited to take the written test.

    This test measures your vocabulary and reading skills. Your score is used to evaluate your communication abilities.

    The written test also includes an essay question. You should prepare for this essay before the test.

  3. Physical Agility Test

    Candidates must be able to meet these standards:

    1. Abdominal Strength: 25 sit-ups in one minute.
    2. Cardiovascular Endurance: Run 1.5 miles in no more than 16 minutes and 57 seconds (16:57).
    3. Upper Body Strength: 15 "perfect protocol" push-ups.

  4. Interviews & Background Investigation

    After you complete the application and tests, an internal committee will review your application. To determine who will advance in the process.

    Oral Board Interview

    Candidates will have an interview with a panel chosen by the Police and Fire Commission.

    Personal History Statement & Background Investigation

    Candidates who score high enough on their oral board interview, will receive information by email, to accessing our eSOPH system.  This system is used to complete online background questionnaires, and a waiver. We will review all candidates' information and conduct a background investigation.

    Interview, Ride-Along, & Personality Assessment

    Remaining candidates will interview with an Assistant Chief of Police, ride-along with a Field Training Officer, and have a personality assessment.

  5. Medical Exam & Physical Readiness Test

    Candidates who receive a conditional job offer must pass a comprehensive medical exam. Madison Police Department will pay for the exam. In addition to passing a medical exam, you will also be required to pass the State of Wisconsin Physical Readiness Test.

  6. Academy

    You will begin employment with the Police Department on the day you start the academy.
