Prescribed Burn of Native Prairie Plants on Southwest Commuter Path

This year, the City of Madison Engineering Division has enlisted the help of the Madison Fire Department to conduct a prescribed burn on the native prairie plants around the stormwater pond on the Southwest Commuter Path near the Beltline. The city is sending postcards to residents within the immediate vicinity to inform them about the prescribed burn in their neighborhood. However, I wanted to extend this information to the entire district due to the heavy commuter traffic on the bike path.

Prescribed burns play a vital role in managing Wisconsin's native plant communities as a way to manage and suppress invasive vegetation. The prescribed burn is slated to take place between March 11 and May 31. Due to the unpredictable nature of weather conditions necessary for prescribed burns, specific dates cannot be provided in advance. The prescribed burn may be postponed or canceled if the weather conditions are not favorable or if MFD staff are unavailable for the task.
