Transit-Oriented Development, Network Redesign, Neighborhood House, Lake Blessing

posted

Greetings friends and neighbors,

We struggle through a cold and dreary spring and then fast-forward to August-like heat. Let's hope the weather and all of us find some balance, with no late frosts, and, hopefully, no new variants.

Here are this week's updates.

Transit-Oriented Development

The Planning Division, in collaboration with Zoning staff, is working to implement a  "Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) overlay zoning" along planned BRT and other high-frequency transit corridors to "create development intensity minimums, reduce parking requirements, and support transit use."

The first two public information meetings on the new TOD zoning proposal will be held this Wednesday at 12 noon and 6pm. The same content will be presented at each of the meetings, and all meetings will be recorded for those who may want to learn more, but don't have availability during meeting times. Moreover, the meetings will be repeated on Monday, May 16, also at 12 noon and 6pm. You can read more details about the proposal and register for the meetings here.

Metro Transit Network Redesign

Metro is holding a final public meeting on its network redesign on Thursday, May 19, at 6pm. The meeting will be held in person in Room 215 of the Madison Municipal Building (215 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd.), and it will also be streamed live. People watching from home will be able to submit questions through a button on Mediasite so that they can be answered live during the meeting. Complete meeting details are here.

On Tuesday, May 31, Metro Transit and the Transportation Policy and Planning Board will hold a public hearing at 6 PM to discuss the proposed network redesign expected to go into effect in June of 2023. More details about the meeting are available here. Learn more about overall Redesign efforts by clicking on the project page.

Neighborhood House Visioning Session

The Neighborhood House Community Center will be holding a public meeting on Thursday, May 12 to gather community input on programming and the future of the center's facility. The meeting will be held at the center, located at 29 S. Mills St., in person from 7-8pm.

Wingra Boats to Lake Blessing This Saturday at 9:30am

From our friends at Wingra Boats:

As we prepare for another season, we cannot overlook the history of Lake Wingra and how powerful and magical it is. Please join us in our 4th annual Lake Blessing, a ceremony to help kick off another safe summer of activities on Lake Wingra.

The Lake Blessing is a time to come together and acknowledge that we are on Ho-Chunk land. Elliott Funmaker, a member of the Ho-Chunk Nation, will be joining us this year to share more about the Ho-Chunk people and their connection to the lake. He will also be performing a song and blessing. Elliott Funmaker is the head singer of the Wisconsin Dells Singers and Dance group and we are grateful he will be able to join us.

Immediately after the ceremony, we will be opening up the boat house for the "first paddle" of the season. We hope you can join us!

Youth Poet Laureate

The City of Madison is now accepting applicants for the first Youth Poet Laureate. The City of Madison, the Madison Arts Commission, and Madison Poet Laureate Angela Trudell Vasquez announce the establishment of a Youth Poet Laureate Program to recognize a youth under the age of twenty for their literary achievements. With this initiative, Madison will become a member of the National Youth Poet Laureate program, which honors talented poets from ages of thirteen (13) through nineteen (19) and provides for competitive opportunities for young people to showcase their literary art on the regional and national stage. Learn more here.

Total Lunar Eclipse

There will be a total lunar eclipse visible in Madison on Sunday, May 15th, beginning at 8:30pm and reaching its maximum state at 11:11pm. More info can be found here.

That's all for now.

Take care and stay safe.
