District 13 Updates: New Police Chief, Camp Randall, Leaf and Brush Collection

September 16, 2020 3:28 PM

Looking for our New Police Chief

When I moved to Madison in 1988 for grad school, David Couper was Madison's Police Chief. Couper served as Chief from 1972 to 1993 and set a high standard for progressive police policy. Couper now serves as an Episcopal priest, which sheds light as to the values he held then and the approach he took while Chief. He has continued his mission focus and remains an influential voice in the law enforcement community, writing books and maintaining a blog on improving policing.

When I think of the qualities I'd like to see in our next Police Chief, I'm hopeful Madison will look search for a modern-day David Couper, someone who thinks outside-the-box, progressive, yet practical, someone who can respond to the enormous challenges of our day with compassion, keen intellect, and dynamic leadership skills.

The Madison Police and Fire Commission will host its final Virtual Community Listening Sessions to gather input on the hiring of a new Chief of Police on Thursday, September 17. Members of the public are invited to join via Zoom, via telephone, or by watching the livestream on the city website or on City Channel. Prior to and during the meeting, staff will monitor the policechiefsearch@cityofmadison.com inbox. Members of the public who are unable to join via Zoom or phone may submit their comments via email. Big Ten Announcement & Camp Randall

District 5 Alder Shiva Bidar and I have raised questions about Badger home football games and the potential impact on nearby neighborhoods. These questions are being posed to UW-Madison and the Chancellor's office, as well as to Public Health and the Mayor's office. We want to know if fans will be allowed to attend and how many home games would be played.  We are concerned about possible beer gardens and tailgating, the congregate activity that could occur along Regent and Breese, and the blowback this could have with Covid cases in our neighborhoods.

Henry Vilas Zoo Welcomes Sammye

Dane County's Henry Vilas Zoo is thrilled to announce the arrival of a new harbor seal. Sammye, a 1-year old female harbor seal, arrived from the Alaska Zoo in August and has completed all of her health checks and is ready to join the two male harbor seals already at the zoo. She was named after the founder of the Alaska Zoo, Sammye Seawell, who passed away last year.

Seal

Lastly, I had started holding office hours at various coffee shops throughout the district prior to Covid, all of which became impossible in our new normal of limited in-person contact.  I am pleased to announce that we'll be starting these up again via Zoom.  Stay tuned for announcements.

In the meantime, if you have questions or concerns, feel free to reach me via email (district13@cityofmadison.com) or by phone (608.424.2580).

Take care and stay safe.
