District 13 Update: How the New Leaf Collection System Will Work

October 2, 2020 2:00 PM

Hi Everyone,

Based on the initial communication I received from the Streets Dept, I was under the impression the new leaf collection system would inform residents as to the precise date their leaves would be picked up.

It turns out this is not quite true.

The new system is a step in the right direction, an improvement over the old system, but not as robust as the pilot project that took place last year in Vilas.

I requested and received this clarification from Bryan Johnson, Public Information Office for the Streets Division:

There's been a little confusion about how the new leaf & yard waste pickup system will work this fall, so we here in the Streets Division wanted to try to clear things up before collection starts during the week of October 11.

Here's how it's going to work.

Before you start raking, go to www.cityofmadison.com/yardwaste and enter your address into the "When do I set out leaves & yard waste for pickup?" form.

After you enter your address, the website will display three dates.  These are the dates when you should set out your leaves & yard waste for collection.

All of the dates shown on the website will be Sundays.  Yes, you should get your leaves & yard waste out for pickup by or on this date.

The website does not indicate the exact day the Streets Division will be working in your neighborhood. It does tell you when to set them out for pickup so you do not miss your collection opportunities.

Streets Division crews will start collecting leaves & yard waste in these neighborhoods during the work week following the Sunday listed.

For example, let's say you enter your address into the form and it tells you to set out your leaves & yard waste on Sunday, October 25.  In this example, this means Streets Division crews will be working in your neighborhood picking up leaves from Monday, October 26 to Friday, October 30..

If you set out the leaves & yard waste on the dates the website indicates, you will not miss your opportunities for pickup. And if you get the material out on the date provided, the stuff will not be on the terrace in front of your home for very long.

In summary, get your set out dates then get your leaves out to the curb on those dates.

If you have any other questions about how this system will work this fall, or if you can't get the form to work, please give us a call at 608-266-4681 or send us an email at streets@cityofmadison.com.  We'll be happy to help.

Please let me know if you have further questions.

Take care, stay safe and have a lovely weekend.
