Homeless Issues, Safe Streets, Transit Network Redesign

February 7, 2022 10:56 AM

Greeting Friends and Neighbors,

Here are this week's updates:

Homeless Issues

On Monday, the City-County Homeless Issues Committee will host an unsheltered homelessness response panel discussion by outreach providers and will also receive an update on the Dairy Drive sheltered campground by MACH OneHealth and Kabba Recovery Services. You can find all the meeting details here.

You can also read this story on the Dairy Drive site known as MachKabba Gardens and watch a recording of the first neighborhood meeting here.

Safe Streets Madison Program

Safe Streets Madison intends to fund improvements in a fair and equitable manner that focus on safety and filling gaps in the walking/biking network. The program aligns with the City's Vision Zero initiative and focuses on streets identified as being on the High Injury Network. These are the streets where serious and fatal crashes are most likely to occur. The program also focuses on closing gaps in the low-stress walking and biking networks to create a connected network for people of all ages and abilities. These efforts are intended to align with the City's ongoing Complete Green Streets project.

On Wednesday, the Transportation Commission will review the first round of potential projects through the new Safe Streets Madison program. You can find documentation on the Safe Streets program here. The projects that are being considered for approval are in this file. A link to the full meeting details including a link to register for comment can be found here

(Staff will be adding a few more documents which will show both projects that need additional engagement -- and therefore are not yet ready for approval -- as well as ones that are listed as Potential Future Project Locations. The Lakeside Street projects are currently on the list of potential future projects.)

Metro Transit Network Redesign

Metro's draft network redesign plan is now available for review. Community engagement meetings are now being put together and a survey will be available soon to provide feedback. Complete info can be found here.

D13 residents have expressed concern about the loss of Route 13 affecting transit access on Olin Ave, noting the impact this would have on residents of the Romnes Apartments as well as access to Goodman Pool. Transit planner Tim Sobota will be attending the Bay Creek Neighborhood Association meeting on Thursday at 6:30 pm to discuss the Transit Network Redesign. Meeting access info listed below:

Digital Equity Project

Many vulnerable adults and families in Madison struggle to get by with no computer/internet, which means limited access to resources that could be helping to lift them out of poverty. DANEnet's Digital Equity Project has been refurbishing donated laptops to distribute to low-income households identified through caseworkers and social workers at more than a dozen agencies around Dane County, and demand has been consistently outpacing their supply of donated laptops. You can help promote digital equity by donating working laptops to DANEnet's project. If a business has desktops to donate, DANEnet can accept them through Cascade Asset Management. More information can be found here, or email shawn@danenet.org.
