Buckeye, Pinney Art, Plant Sales - D15 Update 4/28/19

Mayor Rhodes-Conway announces a new deputy mayor, Buckeye Road reconstruction moves forward, Olbrich expansion continues, and last call for sandbag pickup.

This week, Latinxs and immigrants are organizing a general strike and statewide mobilization on the Capitol on Wednesday to urge the state legislature to restore driver licenses and state ID cards for all in Wisconsin. Also on Wednesday, three artists will make their pitch to create the piece for the new Pinney library branch.

On Friday it's Gallery Night and the Grand Opening for the new bike shop in Lake Edge Shopping Center and this weekend you can take your pick from various plant sales, Russian folk music, and a storytelling workshop.

5:00 pm – The Life of our Last Universal Common Ancestor: Dr. Kate Adamala: The earliest evolution of life included a series of transitions from non-living matter, through prebiotic organic synthesis, and chemical evolution, toward the Last Universal Common Ancestor of all life. Dr. Adamala's work focuses on the immediately-pre-life stage of evolution, when chemistry became biology.

6:00 pm – Craft Night/Open Shop @ The Bodgery: Calling all crafters! Monday nights at the Bodgery are reserved to cater to our crafting community. We meet every Monday from 6-8pm to work on our projects (sewing, knitting, crocheting, quilting, weaving, embroidery, lace-making, etc). All skill levels and forms of crafts welcome.

6:30 pm – Common Council: There a number of Honoring Resolutions including Proclaiming April 2019 as Child Abuse Prevention Month, 
Affirming the principles of fundamental human rights and
equality for women in our community, and 
Supporting the inclusion of Driver License for All provisions in the 2019
Wisconsin State Budget. Also, 29. Approving plans and specifications for 2019 Olbrich Park at Walter Street Site Improvements & 41. Amending Section 12.154(5) of the Madison General Ordinances to increase the grace periods within which to pay for a parking ticket without incurring additional charges.

6:30 pm - District 17 Dane County Supervisor forum: Come hear the 3 candidates running to represent you on the Board: David Ahrens, Amanda McKaig, and Kristen Audet. Special election primary will be Tuesday, May 7.

11:00 am - May 1st Day Without Latinxs & Immigrants--Driver Licenses for All: We are organizing for a Day Without Latinxs & Immigrants general strike and statewide mobilization on the Capitol in Madison on Wednesday, May 1st, to urge the state legislature to restore driver licenses and state ID cards for all in Wisconsin. This means no work, no school, and no buying.

5:00 pm – Madison Children's Museum Free Family Night: On the first open Wednesday night of each month, Madison Children's Museum invites our entire community to enjoy the museum for free. Free Family Night is a great time for first-time visitors to enjoy the museum and is a popular time for older children to return to visit their favorite exhibits.

7:00 pm – Public Art Finalists: Interior Piece Presentations: All are welcome to attend two sessions of artists' presentations for two public art pieces that will be installed in the Madison Public Library New Pinney Library. These six finalists will each have 20 minutes to further present on their vision, providing visuals, concepts, and inspiration within their proposals. Following the presentations there will be an opportunity for the community to make comments on the proposed pieces.

3:00 pm – Hoofer Spring Plant Sale!: Swing on by to grab a free plant or two. Plants offered will be herbs, veggies, etc - all perfect to hold a place on your windowsill this summer!

5:00 pm – Yák?aashb??h-Dakota Mace MFA Exhibition: Dakota Mace's (Diné) work focuses on objects that mimic the landscape of Dinétah (Navajo homeland) through meditative processes of traditional and non-traditional art forms.

5:00 pm – Gallery Night: Showcasing the city's vibrant arts community, Gallery Night is a long-time Madison tradition. Each spring and fall, dozens of venues open their doors to invite the public in to see and shop for original artwork.

6:30 pm – Slow Roll Grand Opening: Lake Edge Shopping Center's newest arrival celebrates its grand opening with a silent auction fundraiser for Capitol Off-Road Pathfinders. On Saturday there will be free bike checkups for all and a free bike bell for the first 50 kids to bring in their bike for a checkup.

9:00 am – Willy Street Park Spring Plant Sale: The Willy Street Park will offer Bedding Plants, Native Plants, Herbs, and Vegetable Plants for sale at our annual Spring Plant Sale.

10:00 am – MAPG Tree, Shrub, Plant & Mushroom Log Sale: This is a sale to benefit the Madison Area Permaculture Guild's Scholarship Fund for the education that we do in our community. We will have a wide variety of edibles, natives and other various plants for sale.

10:00 am – Saturday Science at Discovery: Life in the Air: Learn about aerodynamics, creatures that fly, weather and much more at this free monthly event for kids and families!

11:00 am – OM Village Spring Plant Sale: Hundreds of heirloom vegetables, herbs and succulents will be for sale, along with hand-crafted planters, birdhouses, bird feeders, breadboards, rolling pins, jewelry and other unique items.

7:00 pm - UW Russian Folk Orchestra Spring Concert: Russian and East-European music performed on authentic Russian folk instruments, balalaikas, domras, and bayans.

8:30 am – 1st Northside Market 2019: Join us in opening the 15th season. Visit with some familiar faces and meet the new vendors for 2019. Arrive early, Mariachi Corcel De Madison will be performing from 9-11am.

12:30 pm – Sunday Afternoon Live: Pro Arte Quartet: Concert is free and open to the public. The concert takes place in the Brittingham Gallery III and seating is first come, first serve.? Listen to the concert streamed live. 

2:00 pm – Introduction to Storytelling Workshop: We're hosting a free storytelling workshop with Jen Rubin, co-producer of The Moth in Madison. We'll be covering storytelling fundamentals and teaching you a technique for discovering events from your life that you want to tell stories about.
