Greetings friends and neighbors, 

I know the topic of school safety and School Resource Officers (SROs) has been a topic of interest. I wanted to make sure you are aware of an opportunity to attend a virtual session this week to hear the topic discussed with a panel of local experts. 

What: Nehemiah Reentry Lunch & Learn - Interrupting the School to Prison Pipeline: The SRO Debate

This month's session will explore the ways that the school system and the community work toward helping youth avoid being caught up in the criminal justice system. Our panel of professionals and those with lived experience look at the effectiveness of Student Resource Officers (SRO) and other methods within the education system.

Ali Muldrow is Co-Executive Director at GSAFE. For the last several years, she developed the curriculum for and facilitated Foundations of Leadership, a course based in the experiences of LGBTQ+ youth of color that recruits high school students from the entire Madison public school district to develop their capacities as leaders and earn Advanced Learning credit. In the spring of 2015, I launched GSAFE's New Narrative Project in the Dane County Juvenile Detention Center, a program that provides incarcerated young people with clear channels to academic success, civic engagement, and self-determination. 

Ali has been a part of this community her entire life. She attended Madison public schools until adulthood, and worked in the district as a custodian, as support staff, and as an educator. Her partner is a dual-language immersion teacher. She's the mother of three, two of which are current MMSD students. Ali currently serves as Board President on the MMSD School Board.

David Hart is a practicing attorney, womanist ally author, and lead pastor of Sherman Church,  a growing church in Madison, Wisconsin. He is serving as special assistant to the superintendent at Madison Metropolitan School District with three main facets to the position: policy, community engagement and special issues, particularly surrounding restorative justice.His mom says he's special on the inside. 

Kaziah Anderson has been supporting adolescents since 2013. She is a Certified Peer Support and a Parent Peer Support Specialist and has been at JustDane in Madison for four years. Kaziah is a senior, (or, in her last year?) at UW- Madison, majoring in Community and Nonprofit Leadership with a focus on adolescent development and the effects of parental incarceration on children and families. Kaziah is also a Co-Executive Director of Moms On a Mission, (MOMs,) who support the students at East high school in Madison by preventing and de-escalating potentially violent situations in order to reduce student's contact with police.

Corey Saffold is the Director of School Safety and Security for the Verona Area School District (VASD) in Verona, Wisconsin. Prior to his role with the VASD, Saffold served as a City of Madison Police Officer for a decade. During that time, he also served as a school resource officer, where he successfully created and implemented restorative programs that reduced citations, arrests, and overall police involvement within the school. Concurrently, Saffold served as an advisor for the Black Student Union, where he facilitated multiple initiatives that contributed to the successful matriculation of diverse students through high school and on to higher education.

In 2020, Governor Evers appointed Saffold to the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents, where he sat on the Capital Budget and Planning Committee, Education Committee, and the Student Appeals and Disciplinary committee. While a Regent, Saffold advocated for and broadened overall access to education.

In 2016, Saffold became a member of the Wisconsin Humanities Council Speakers Bureau. There, he utilized his professional expertise to advise a diverse range of constituents throughout the state of Wisconsin on the challenges and opportunities of policing in today's society. Throughout Saffold's professional career, he has continued to be a thought leader in the design, facilitation, and implementation of innovative policies and strategies that bridge the gap between community and police.

Saffold currently sits on the Office of School Safety Advisory Committee at the Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ).
