Elected to Serve as Madison’s Common Council President

Hi neighbors,

President Madison

Yesterday, I was elected President of the Madison Common Council, alongside Alder Carmella Glenn (District 18) as Vice President.

I'm honored. I'm grateful. And I'm still taking it all in.

To my colleagues: thank you for your unanimous support. That kind of trust means a lot, and it's not something I take for granted. This body is made up of people with different perspectives, lived experiences, and priorities—and that's how it should be. We won't always agree, but my commitment is to continue leading with a willingness to do the hard work that moves us forward.

I also want to thank Alders Vidaver, Figueroa Cole, and former Alder Currie, the three most recent Council Presidents for their leadership and service. Each of them have helped to shape this role in important ways, and I'm grateful for the foundation they've built. I'm looking forward to building on that work and continuing to move our city forward.

This moment is also historic. For the first time, two Black women are serving as President and Vice President of the Madison Common Council. That matters. Not just because of who we are, but because of what it represents for leadership in this city—who is seen, who is heard, and who is trusted to lead. I'm proud to stand in this moment with Alder Glenn, and I'm excited for what our leadership can represent for Madison.

To my District 17 residents: this is yours too. Everything I bring into this role has been shaped by this community—your advocacy, your trust,  your expectations, and your willingness to stay engaged, even when it's a challenge. My commitment to the district remains the same and I will still fight for the resources and investments our community deserves.

Congratulations to all the Alders in even numbered districts who were sworn in yesterday as well. Also, we welcomed two new Alders yesterday, Ellen Zhang in District 8 and Noah L. Lieberman in District 14.

There is a lot of work ahead. Some of it will be challenging. Some of it will require us to stay grounded when things get the most complicated. But I'm ready to get to work.

For now though, I just want to say thank you.
