Michael Johnson's legacy lives on through our young people

Today, in sadness, I join many across Dane County in mourning the loss of Michael Johnson, President and CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Dane County, who passed away unexpectedly at the age of 50. For decades, Mike dedicated his life to creating opportunities for young people, families and other leaders, helping them see possibilities far beyond their current circumstances. His impact on Madison and Dane County will be felt for generations.

I've known Mike since he arrived in Madison and spent countless hours working alongside him on more initiatives than I can even remember right now. What I will remember most is that he never played it small. His vision for his family, his leadership, and this community was always next level. He challenged all of us to think bigger, dream bigger, and work harder on behalf of the people we serve.

I am grateful for the many conversations we shared over the years and for the ways he helped shape my own leadership journey. Whether advocating for young people, fundraising,  building partnerships, or creating opportunities where others saw barriers, Mike led with purpose, and an unwavering belief in the potential of our community.

What makes this loss feel especially profound is that tomorrow evening, during the Common Council's Juneteenth recognition, we will honor several outstanding Black youth leaders from across Madison, including a young person nominated by Boys & Girls Clubs of Dane County. That recognition was created to celebrate young people who are already leading, creating change, and helping shape the future of our city.

It is impossible not to think about Mike's legacy in that moment. The young people we will recognize tomorrow are exactly why he devoted his life to this work. They are a reflection of the opportunities he fought to create and the belief he had in the next generation.

My deepest condolences go out to Mike's family, the staff and young people who who are part of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dane County, and the countless community members whose lives were impacted by his leadership. Mike's legacy will continue to live on through the young people he inspired, mentored, and empowered.
