Statement from Common Council President Sabrina Madison on today's officer involved shooting

Like many of you, I have now seen the videos circulating on social media of today's officer involved shooting on the east side of Madison. Straight up, these videos are very difficult to watch.  They are both disturbing and painful.

I've received several calls from alders with questions and what I can say without a doubt is that I expect a full, comprehensive, and transparent independent investigation into today's shooting of a community member.

Madison Police Department will be providing an update today at 4pm. WKOW is providing a livestream.

Right now, my immediate thoughts are with the community member who was shot by a Madison Police officer today. I am also holding space for those who are hurting—especially those who have seen the videos and are struggling with what they witnessed. Please take care of yourselves and one another. United Way's 211 is a local resource to help find accessible mental health supports to help in processing what you may have witnessed in person or watched across social media.

I will continue to share updates as more information becomes available.
