Salvation Army Redevelopment Proposal Update

As anticipated, the Salvation Army has filed an application for demolition and for conditional uses for their site and adjacent parcels on the 600 block of E. Washington. They are expected to re-file their application by Aug. 28, hence the earliest dates that city committees will consider the proposal are:

• Oct. 16* - Urban Design Commission
• Oct. 28* - Plan Commission

* revised dates

Note that these dates are tentative. Other committees and Common Council will also consider any affordable housing fund award that is proposed for the Salvation Army project; those dates are TBD. The Tenney-Lapham Neighborhood Association steering committee has not completed their evaluation of the proposal, nor has TLNA Council voted on any measure of support or opposition, but the Salvation Army has recently reached out to TLNA to schedule a steering committee meeting. That meeting date should be announced by TLNA next week. For more information, please check out the Facebook event page or the Madison BRT website. The meeting will include a presentation and open house with more information about the draft recommended route and stop locations including additional analysis of costs, ridership, and design.

Temporary Ban on Alcohol in Reynolds Park

At the request of TLNA Council and me, the Parks Division has enacted another temporary 90-day ban on alcohol consumption at Reynolds Park. This was due primarily to an increase in reports of illegal behavior often associated with the over-consumption of alcohol. MPD and Park Rangers are now able to issue citations to those in violation, although education is their primary focus.

The park picnic tables have also been removed, although that could be a temporary measure since the tables are an amenity that the Parks Division and many neighbors would like to see return if possible. Over the winter TLNA and other stakeholders, including neighbors, MPD, the Parks Division, and park users, are expected to continue evaluating the situation, explore a permanent alcohol ban, and consider other issues, e.g., the return and placement of picnic tables.

N. Baldwin Street Closure & Traffic Shifts on E. Johnson

According to a press release from City Traffic Engineering, the ongoing E. Johnson reconstruction project will necessitate closing northbound Baldwin St. between Dayton and East Johnson Streets from 8/26/19 to 8/30/19. Southbound traffic on Baldwin will not be impacted, although southbound left turns from Johnson to Baldwin will be prohibited 8/23 through 8/30. Additionally, eastbound Johnson St. traffic will be shifted to the north side of the median along Johnson. From noon on 8/30/19 to 9/2/19 traffic will be as it is today.

From 9/3/19 to 9/7/19 eastbound Johnson St. traffic will be again be shifted to the north side of the median and left turns onto southbound Baldwin prohibited, however Baldwin otherwise will be fully open.

Jeremy Nash at City Traffic Engineering continues to address issues related to signage and traffic calming measures during reconstruction while MPD will be doing more spot enforcement to discourage cut-through drivers and to encourage them to slow down and stick to the main arterials. MPD is also working to get the speed board placed in the area again. Please contact the Traffic Enforcement Safety Team if you have particular concerns about speeding and driver behavior. Note that Traffic Engineering is also considering putting message boards up further out and closer to Camp Randall on home UW football game days to discourage out-of-towners from attempting to use E. Johnson during the reconstruction.

Get Current Info on Public Beach and Lake Water Quality

Although summer is winding down, many folks want to take a dip in our lakes. Unfortunately, many of our beaches have been closed off and on due the presence of blue-green algae. Be to sure to check Public Health Madison & Dane County's page for water quality information and beach closures. Your pets can also be impacted by water quality and algal blooms, so be sure to keep them out of the water as needed.

Parking Enforcement For August 25 Breese Stevens Concert

Attendance at the August 25 Hall & Oates concert at Breese Stevens is expected to be similar to that of large concerts earlier this summer. City Parking Enforcement Officers will again be conducting proactive patrol operations in the vicinity of the stadium and in parking ramps such as Festival Foods. Note that the Parking Enforcement Officers will be patrolling, but it is very important to call the non-emergency MPD number (608-255-2345) to report blocked driveways and similar infractions. The PEOs will issue citations, but infractions that require towing should always be phoned in.

 

Repeat Call for Input: Task Force on Government Structure

The Task Force on the Structure of City Government has prepared a resident survey to assist in its public engagement effort. Please visit the Task Force website, watch the video, and take the survey, which is in a link right below the video.

The Task Force wants your help to find out if this current city government structure works for all Madison residents --- or if changes could help make city government work better.

Call for Volunteer Drivers to drive Madison Seniors and Veterans

Urgent Need for Volunteer Drivers to drive Madison Seniors and Veterans

Like all Dane County communities, Madison has a growing senior population, and a large veteran population as well, many of whom no longer drive. Losing personal transportation is a hurdle that leads many seniors and veterans to turn to volunteer drivers registered with Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of Dane County to get to the medical appointments that are so important to maintain their health.

RSVP's Driver Escort volunteers drive seniors to medical appointments and Vets Helping Vets volunteers drive veterans and their families to important appointments. Madison has a serious need for more drivers to make sure both of these programs can serve the growing requests from passengers.

The position is very flexible volunteers choose the rides they take during the service hours Monday-Friday 8am-4pm and they receive mileage reimbursement and extra liability insurance. Please consider volunteering -- pay it forward now, so it's there for you later!
